lol OMG, that's funny (and a keeper)! (Sorry, I don't have a comment re Franz or Trent's opinion, just wanted to compliment the caricature!)

"Usually" implies that he is wrong sometimes. This is one of those times. Franz Ferdinand rules. woot!

I think they've got great songs, put on a killer live show and I even like their style.

But I can't get over feeling like they're constantly taking the piss.

if they looked like nickelback, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.

lol Who's the bitter Billy now?

I totally agree. They're like a caricature of a new wave band. The songs are loaded with hooks, but they're completely empty calories.

hey, i have NEVER denied being perpetually bitter. it's part of who i am. it defines me.

maybe FF is seriously brilliant or maybe they're just crowd-pleasingly great. i don't know. i thought for a while that i hated arcade fire too, but i gave them a really good listen a couple of months ago and they finally "clicked" for me. i still don't LOVE arcade fire, but i enjoy their album. it's a pleasant listen. i can't say that about franz ferdinand. i don't enjoy them. i think they're to the new wave revival as stone temple pilots were to grunge.

and i know there are some STP fans on here, so feel free to help yourself to a scoop or two of worm salad, fresh from the can. lol

oh, and seriously, i'm not bitter....but wouldn't YOU be???

Does that make The Killers the new new wave equivalent to Bush?

I have only heard one Arcade Fire song (the one with the video where they're, like, marching around and stuff) and I cannot for the life of me figure out what all the fuss is about.

As for FF (keeping in mind I have only heard the singles), they are a hook machine, their music is danceable and they have a gimmick. Doesn't mean I have to like them (and I don't), but I can understand the fascination among young people who like mindless pop music, but can only admit to liking it if the artist making it has the word "indie" somewhere in their bio.

I should add that I find FF's songs to be entirely derivative (okay, I didn't have to add it, but I did biggrin ).

i still don't get the enormity of the fuss over arcade fire, but i do think they made a good record. personally, i think the decemberists should be getting that kind of buzz, but what do i know? shrug

That "All The Things That I've Done" is like a 3-minute Hookapalooza! Too bad it's lyrically as worthwhile as twiddling your thumbs. sigh

Ya know, I thought I absolutely hated The Killers until I saw that video. Now I know that they have at least one non-crap song. I kinda like it.

Yeah, what do YOU know, Mr. Smarty Pants? hmph!

I could like the Decemberists if I liked acoustic guitar, but I generally don't so I think they're one I'll have to say "Next". redface

But is it the driving force in most of their songs? "Ziggy Stardust" has loads of acoustic. "Hunky Dory" too. That doesn't stop them from being great.

In everything I've heard, it seems to be the driving force.

well, if by "acoustic guitar" you mean "melody", then they're guilty as charged. but as actual instrumentation goes, most of their songs are driven by horns and a string section. hell, there's even a lead accordion in one of their songs. shrug

yeah- what he said mr.green

ps, hate if you must, but in spite me enjoying the Decemberists album a bit more than Arcade Fire, I'm more in love with Arcade Fire. While they both gave brilliant live shows, Arcade Fire just had something more that pushed them on top for me...

oh, and on topic, I heard FF on the radio yesterday and it made me happy smile

nah, i get it...arcade fire definitely has a "bigger" presence than the decemberists...they're more dynamic to watch, and i think they generate a lot more excitement live. but i'm with you about the albums - i enjoy the arcade fire's album, but i'm just completely gaga over the decemberist's "picaresque".
