Is "Sorry" about Prince? Couldn't help but wonder if she's speaking French the way she did on LoveSong as a subliminal hint...maybe it's her way of apologizing for blowing him off?

She isn't saying sorry, she is telling the other person their words are useless and not to speakl. most people think it's about Elton John.

I think Sorry is probably one of the best on there...easily. The hooks are in the lyrics...which is where they count.

nope. "words" is about a lover who's actions doesn't match his/her words. totally different. "sorry" is saying fuck off to someone who was talking shit.

"Confessions" is the number on album on Amazon....a month before it comes out. Although, that doesn't mean much for record sales. The rest of the Top Ten is filled with acts and/ore that skew so old, they make Madonna look like a kid (Bette, Rod, Diana Krall...)

Madonna has had a lot more relationships than Prince. It could be about anyone she's dated.

I think this is going to be one of those albums that will be played out this week and next and then will sit and get dusty...

nothing wrong with it, but i think i've already listened to it too much and it's already getting old. there's nothing on this record that is timeless like a Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" or a Prince "Purple Rain."

Stuart Price? I don't know his credentials. But I think she should have chosen someone with a little musical training. He's a dj and this is a dj record. Many of the songs, albeit good, are almost one trick ponies. How the song starts is how it ends...and there is little variation through out each. This is why I think ROL worked well...William is classically trained. It shows too. There was a complexity he added to her music that wasn't there before. He was also old school...so he didn't push the bounderies as someone who was up and coming would have. However, this also added a maturity to ROL too. What would this album have sounded like had she used someone like BT or even Basement Jaxx or anyone who composes electronic music as well as has a dj sence about them? Just a thought.

Actually, I think Ive read somewhere that Stuart did study classical music. Apparently before he DJ'd, he never went to clubs, and his whole musical instinct comes from his training and study in classical music.

I dont disagree with you on Basement Jaxx though. I would love love love to her Maddy work with those guys.

"Erotica" was her huge breakup album beacuse Warren had dumped her for Annette Bening and Sean Penn was getting engaged to Robin Wright. "Thief of Hearts" is about Annette Bening. Just like all the breakup songs on "Ray of Light" are about that Andy Bird guy (so is "Beautiful Stranger")
Also in 92 she was breaking up with Tony Ward, that model for gay porn. And she was fucking her bodyguard. Read her biography that Andrew Morton wrote. It's good trashy fun.

like it or not, push, jump, how high, and sorry are great songs. easily up there with anything "great" she's ever done. i think every madonna cd has a few songs that will always outlast the record they are on. for instance, deeper and deeper, waiting, words, and rain are all songs that still stand out on erotica. music and don't tell me still stand out on music. what makes this record stand out - and yes, perhaps what will date it (but only in the same way that erotica is dated because of the new york house style prominently featured throughout the record) - is that all the songs are interchangeable. its very difficult to (for me) to pick a best song or, for that matter, a worst song. its a perfect collection...kinda like a set of encyclopedias; without one you just don't have the whole set.

erotica, by the way, is a very gay record. its definitely a nod to the gay club scene of the early 90's. the whole club kid scene was beginning to die (figuratively and literally) and it was getting back to less show and more dance. this record has that same vibe. forget all that's going on around us, let's just dance for a night!

like what? i love erotica...its one of my faves. let's be honest though, its not a very "deep" record. it is full of sexual innuendo, love songs, break up songs, one social commentary song, and that's about it. how is the new cd any different? she's got love songs, break up songs, some social commentary, and songs about having fun. pretty much the same topics (albeit this new one has more messages than madonna would care to admit) and pretty much a nod to the same community. i don't see the big difference.

You really can't see the differences between this project and Erotica? lol

Well, for one, the production on this one is monotonous and derivative. I also don't see any worthwhile lyrics here (maybe you think "Isaac" is deep, but I can't compare it with something like "Bad Girl" or "In This Life" when I'm too busy laughing at it). The songcraft here is just SUBPAR when you compare it with Erotica. I don't connect with any of these tracks.

I also don't see any worthwhile lyrics here (maybe you think "Isaac" is deep, but I can't compare it with something like "Bad Girl" or "In This Life" when I'm too busy laughing at it). The songcraft here is just SUBPAR when you compare it with Erotica. I don't connect with any of these tracks.

i should point out that i've never found much of any madonna lyrics to be profound or deep. that is why i used the term with quotation marks, lol. madonna is to music what andy warhol was to art; just "deep" enough to warrant some sort of ponderance of the meaning but nothing more than that. very little of erotica is "deep" (why's it so hard, bad girl, and in this life are the deepest and, honestly, is any investigation into their meaning necessary? its all sort of spelled out for you).

that said, this cd (as with american life and ray of light) actually require you to ask "what is she talking about here?" i know you find isaac funny but you can't possible pretend to know right off the bat what she's talking about. you've got to think about it and maybe even research this isaac person to get it. why the imagery of judgement day? what is the prayer being sung? what does it signify? ok, so you don't like the song and that is completely understandable (and probably a common opinion even) but it doesn't make the song any less interesting or symbolic. future lovers is the same way as is let it will be...there is some amount of digging to be done to fully "get" those tracks. the brilliance behind them, i think, is that even if you don't want the "intellectual" or "philosophical" aspects of those songs, you can still dance to them and have a good time. i don't have to care what she's saying in isaac to enjoy the beat and the middle eastern vibe going on. i think that is pretty cool.

i suppose this is all up to what your qualifiers are for the term "deep." if by "deep" you simply mean non-material/non-superficial topics, then sure, erotica had its "deep" moments. however, if by "deep" you mean something that makes you think beyond the surface of the lyrics, perhaps in imagery or metaphor, then erotica is lacking a lot of that. this new record has plenty to go around but it doesn't get hung up on it at the same time (no pun intended, lol). a good example is prince's little red corvette. it can be just a fun pop song or it can be social commentary. its a great song either way.

keep in mind, all of this is imo. lol
