Just my twocents but the rock guitar is dead anyway. I mean who out there in the mainstream plays solos any more. Rock needs a major comeback and for that to happen Rap has to be pushed into the underground, then and only then will young Black ppl pick up the guitar again.

i think it's less about rock guitar being dead (which, okay, it is at the moment) than it is about diversity in radio formatting being dead right now. what we hear on mainstream radio is probably more regimented than it was back in the early '60s when the likes of pat boone were all you could hear on radio. the time is really ripe for some brilliant new artist or band to come through and kick the world's ass.

This person has got shit twisted in a major way.

There is no, "...lack of young talented black guitar players..." at all. Known or unknown.

I plan to keep playing Rock/Jazz/Blues/R&B guitar whether it's hip or not.

After all, What is Hip?...

It's up to the industry and the public. If the record labels found a young black artist/guitarist that's marketable and could put some cool guitar playing ALONG with some good songs (like Prince or Living Colour),then MTV,BET, and VH-1 may have someone new to promote. Certain kids might pick up on it and say "That's cool..I want to do that" and the seed is planted. But it's up to the industry..Right now the industry doesn't care about black bands. They just want solo R&B or hip-hop artists that they can play to death on MTV/BET and make a zillion dollars.

Sad to say it, but it'll be a long while until we see another Prince, Funkadelic, Cameo, Fishbone or Band Of Gypsys.

We are practicing, gigging, recording, selling...

I don't necessarily think there's a lack, either. It's just so much easier to stick with promoting us as rappers, thugs or athletes. And, that cookie-cutter mentality informs so much of what the media perpetuate that it would blow your mind.

tA, should I practice the ash-rosewood Strat or the ash-maple one? hmmm

It is, after all, Sunday. Maybe this young guitar player will opt for a distorted bass, instead...

But you are a hip individual with a mind of your own. You've also been around long enough to see the different styles of music come and go and develop your own personal taste and style and become an individual.

Since hip hop has dominated R&B radio and much of pop radio for almost 15 years, most of these kids today have been born into it and haven't had any style changes like we had growing up. Someone that is 15 years old hasn't seen a style change in their entire lifetime. Hip hop is all they know. By the time I was 15, I had already seen Motown, bluesy type R&B from the early 1970s, disco, funk with horns from the 1970s, and more modernized funk from the early 1980s. That's just the R&B side of the fence alone.

I would love to see what's hip today become passe but radio is never going to let that happen. Major corporations own these stations now and they are going to make sure the styles never change. The record companies are loving this era also because they are making tons of money off a much cheaper music form.

Screw radio and screw the mainstream media as a whole. The spirit of rock, the blues, the whole spirit of heartfelt artistry for that matter is still alive each and every time I plug into an amp. It doesn't matter if I'm playing in a club full of folks or in my in-law's living room.
Aside from that, go see Slash at a Velvet Revolver show and tell me that rock guitar is dead. Check out Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters or Audioslave and see if you feel the same way. We don't even have to stick with big names. There are people right down the street from you who are doing it with soul.
I know there are tons of bands in the Ohio area that are constantly rockin'.
Do we need to see them on t.v. to be convinced? People are still out there doin it y'all, whether the mainstream promotes it heavily or not.
Some of them are simply playing for their own enjoyment, and that of their families and friends. That's where it all started anyway. To me, that's more important and more likely to keep the spirit of this music alive then simply pushin' some cat with a guitar and makin' a novelty out of the fact that they happen to be black, indian or chinese.
