1.

Sly & The Family Stone: There's A Riot Going On- This is a record I play when the sh*t hits the fan and I want to get dirty! I call it the "Abbey Road Of Funk Music"...

2.
Parliament: Mothership Connection- Whether you're 7 years or 90 years old, you should have this album because it's simply P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N!

3.
Herbie Hancock: Headhunters- The record I think Miles wished he could do instead of Bitches Brew 5 years earlier!

Mine haven't really changed over the years...

...The first 2 are constants, the third is a variable between about 5 other titles.

If you ask me the choices are fairly simple.

1.There's A Riot Going On-By far the deepest, earthiest, most toxic funk ever made. Never before or since have instruments sounded so bubbly, organic and moist as this album. It honestly blows my mind that this was created with just guitars, drums, and keyboards (and occasional horns), it sounds like sly summoned ghosts from some mystic tar pit to produce these sounds.

2.America Eats Its Young-I think this album best represents all the different sub-categories and hybridizations within the funk genre, from orchestrated isaac hayes style funk (A Joyful Process), tight horn-driven JB style funk (Philmore), burbling Sly funk (Effect/Cause), guitar heavy funk-rock (Pussycat), even dashes of southern soul, country and carribean music pop up here and there and there's a song that even prefigures disco by a couple years...for better or worse (that was my girl)

3.Sex Machine-The Album that cemented funk and officially ushered in the era of funk.
