Let's be honest; this thread is for the benefit of Mr Ian Renner. He's the man that publicly announces he dislikes The Beatles.

I kind of can understand, coming from an era ruled by Madonna's, Jacksonses and Prince's, the music by The Beatles can sound a bit dull to some...

Not to me, though. I grew up listening to their hits on the radio and while growing older, I have gotten to love their music more and more. Maybe Beatles music is best appreciated when older, when knowing how to place them into musical history.

To me, guideline to loving them more is of course the persistance of the entire world to proclaim them the originators of pop and rock music as we know it today. But the thing that entirely hipped me to them were the Anthology albums.

First thing was Anthology nr 2. The first Anthology covers their R&R and R&B roots, which I could not appreciate at the time. But the seconds of the Anthology albums contained rehearsals, alternate takes and demo's of loads of their greatest hits, including such a wealth in liner notes I could not help being impressed.

The Beatles' recording history is indeed historic and really interesting to read when you are such a musical junkie as I am; reading how all these classic recordings were created with so much ingenuity just awed me.

The actual song that imprinted my future love for The Beatles was the Anthology version of John Lennon's Across The Universe. The song is of such beauty it made me cry.

I backtracked Anthology number 1 and by the time number 3 came out, I already had backtracked all their albums, the two rare tracks albums and found love for their later output, esp The White Album and Abbey Road/Let It Be.
Anthology 3 is now my favest of Anthology's as it covers their transcend into rock and has so many stunning demo's and rehearsals it dazzled me. Anthology 3 was the album that made me avid George Harrison fan.

From that moment on I have been educating myself. Collecting their music; I now own all their albums and every single or EP they released under the name Beatles.
Since a short time I have moved on to the actual bootlegs; alternate takes and recording sessions.

Mr Ian Renner, what can I say? The Beatles discography is playing on my Windows Media Player right now and it dazzles me. I wish I could share it with you and hip you to this best of boy bands. Orgnote me, my sweet friend, and I will send you three of their songs and I dare you to tell me that they're whack.

I grew up listening to their music. Anytime our dad used to take us somewhere (be it in the Netherlands or abroad) he played the tape he used to own of the Magical Mystery Tour and played it. i must've heard it a thousand times. That being the case I always liked the Beatles, but the last few years their music has become more magical to me than ever. I've tracked down their albums on vinyl (cuz I already owned them on cd) and even searched out the rarer more expensive versions of said albums. Ofcourse bootlegs couldn't be left behind. I escpecially enjoyed the unplugged White album.
When the Anthology cd's were released (around 1997) i immediately bought them and ofcourse again was impressed. This is the best band there ever was!

I must admit that to me music is digital these days. SO my entire collection is in MP3 form. I also collect scans of the original art, to make it complete.

It diminshes a part of an experience, but it makes it all a bit more accesible.

I was watching VH1 last night, and they had the Top 100 Bands countdown on all night. Well, I watched the top 10 or so, and The Beatles didn't even make the top 10!!!! I know these sorts of lists/shows mean nothing, but I was shocked. Fucking R.E.M. was in the top 10 though.

If you continue to praise them he will never catch on, the reason he probably dislikes them in the first place is because people have raved about them so much that hearing them for the first time must have been underwhelming.

we should have a general 60's appreciation thread. The Beatles are not all music.

Most of their music still stands today and will in a hundred years. It is not saying they are the greatest or the whateverest, but they are just a very kewl piece in the entire musical spectrum.

If someone is willing to dismiss a band solely on what other people say, or reacting against what other people say, it's their own mistake and I can't help it.

I will listen to the songs if you wish to send them, but don't get your hopes up. "Across the Universe" is actually one of my least favorite Beatles songs. I even hate Bowie's cover version and the others that are floating around (Rufus Wainright, Fiona Apple).

I usually put together a compilation of the best stuff from the anthologys on a single disk.. I've made probably 200 of them..mainly cause I cant keep up with cd-r's.. and I love doin it with all those different outtakes and songs.. there are so many songs on the anthology.. so many to choose

My mom used to play Wings alot when I was little, but then in the 90s The Beatles had that whole Anthology special with the three double discs of outtakes, and it really sparked my interest, and discovered my Mom had a few Beatles records which are still my favorites..




Anyway, (oddly) The Beatles became some of my "teen years" music, same with Prince..

Well.....2 of them maybe still do, two don't fo sho.....

But growing up used to a certain kind of artistic sensibility, it can be difficult to appreciate what came before. Just like it's difficult for many adults to appreciate newer music, and especially rap.
