Janet Jackson's former mother-in-law says she's "always believed" the sexy singer secretly gave
birth more than 20 years ago, but she's never seen proof the alleged mystery kid exists. "I've
always believed that. Of course I do," said Etterline DeBarge, the mom of Jackson's first ex-
husband, James DeBarge, 42. "I knew she was pregnant. She was heavy. I have an instinct. I
can tell." But the matriarch of Motown Records' musical DeBarge clan says Janet, then 18, never
said she was expecting a child. And the Michigan granny admits she's never seen evidence the
phantom Jackson child exists. "It's like accusing somebody of murder when you can't find a
body," she said. "We don't know for sure."

For years rumors swirled that the songbird had a secret child who was given up for adoption, but
the story took on new legs last week when James DeBarge's kid brother Darryll "Young"
DeBarge, stated that Janet had a daughter. He claimed the mystery child was an 18-year-old girl
named Renee who was raised by Jackson's older sister Rebbie, but Rebbie has no such child,
according to several Jackson family sources. Rebbie has two daughters, ages 35 and 28, and a
son, 19.

Janet Jackson's rep refused to confirm or deny the report, but said the singer didn't want to
comment. Etterline DeBarge remains hopeful. "All my grand kids want to find me sooner or
later," she said yesterday. "Maybe that will happen now."

Hmm...I wonder why this story just won't die.This rumor has been circulating for 20 years now.Janet should come clean and either deny or confirm it.This is kinda ridiculous.

does janet have a new album coming out soon ... could just be her "people" putting it out in anticipation of a new janet "remake" .... remaking her into a "caring conservative mother like Madonna" ....

Yes, I realize people give their children up for adoption and that's fine but that' not what this sounds like (if it's true and the fact that Janet is saying "Hell, no." is starting to make me think it might be).

I think it's a slow celeb news day....or week. I mean, Madonna's been doing and press and while the entertainment programs love her, all they seem to harp on is the fact that her kids don't watch TV....which he learned from the press of her last album, right?

i would never underestimate it .... the fact that she hasnt "spoken yet about her Pain , etc" ...just imagine how many talk gossipers like barbara walters, 60 minutes ... etc want to interview her etc ... !!!

this happens sooo much with the entertainment people .... Prince does it ... remember when Whoopee and Ted Dansen were dating .... conveniently right before they had a movie coming out .... Brad and Angelina .... i realize celebrity couples are a lil different than this ... but ... so much of the celebrity gossip is just that .... Madonnas sex book right before her most provacative album ....

i smell janet's most personal album ... dealing with all her pain of this child and her inner most thoughts !!!

I got a question for the Janet diehard fans...

On her 1993 album 'janet.',there is a nice song called "Where Are You Now".It was never released as a single,but it got alot of airplay in my area.I always wondered if this song is about her marriage to James? He once said that he thinks this song was secretly dedicated to him.Has Janet ever commented on this?

Erm, I thought Janet was pregnant by James once but miscarried. I remember someone mentioning it from some Ebony magazine at the time.

Still, what's with all the DeBarges coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden?

See I don't see it as all of a sudden because Darryll spoke about this earlier this year as did Chico a few years ago. It's not even shocking anymore. The 'no comment' from Janet just makes it more salacious but I really wouldn't be surprised if she never addressed it and just let it die but I certainly don't put it past her to be truth.

Me neither, apart from the 18 years old thing. I'd totally believe it if he'd just said she was 20. And why did Young DeBarge say her name, her age and that she's "a wonderful singer", yet James' own mother has never even met her and doesn't know 100% if she exists?

It is a shame because if she were married why would she think it would hurt her career especially if she already had a built in fan base by being a Jackson? Usually it's new male artists that they don't want attached in the industry.

I think keeping the (alleged) baby a secret or out of her daily life was more based on personal reasons than professional. If anything, what may hurt is the fact that she kept two large secrets along with all the other drama her family has been connected to their credibility is delicate. I think the Jacksons would do (and have done) a lot to preserve their family legacy.

A Detroit DJ (Michelle McCormick on the FM talk station which is kind of crazy over loosing Stern soon) said she knew (or knew of) the Debarge mother and said she had her number. She said "mother DeBarge" is kind of a drunk and would be willing to tell all.
