I love the internet... Toni and TLC were not broke. They were millionaires, who declared bankruptcy in order to force their record label into contract renegotiation. While they may have been "cash poor", they were not "poor poor", as their assets still totaled in the millions. And they were "cash poor" due to improper spending and signing a bad contract that they had the option to not sign...

As for Reid not knowing a song was on her album, he is a label head. He cannot be expected to know every detail about every album on his label. This is why he has a staff. Not to mention (again) that it was a deal signed and recorded more or less recorded before his tenure began...

And if you read my posts, you will note I mentioned his "batting average", with as many, if not more, misses than hits.

I love how a CEO gets the blame for art not reaching an audience. LA is not a producer anymore. The last two artists he stayed in the studio with, in a coaching capacity, were Mariah and Usher, who I believe are two of the top selling artists out today...

so maybe his ass needs to stay in the studio and out of the executive office....when you have a high profile artist like patti you dont ignore the album....period!! clive would never have done that..he kept with santana and allowed him to grow knowing that all fads come and go and one day someones talent will come back in flavor...

thats just business 101...you treat your employees like they are the best employee you have and coach them to be the best they can.

he failed...and thats why the industry support for him has sunk..the man needs to apologize to babyface and stick to what he knows..creating music.

Industry support for LA Reid hasn't sunk. He's being hailed as a genious for Mariah's comeback. That comeback is going to override a lot of his fuckups. Hell yes, it was rude to not even bother listening to the album. However, Clive Davis is no angel he's just a PR mastermind. Love how he took credit for Usher's success when Confessions was done under L.A. Reid. And, it's not like he treated Debra Cox, Next, and Busta Rhymes well. IMO, he's done nothing but milk Luther.

Um, Lyor Cohen was in charge of IDJ during Mariah's Charmbracelet era. And, what about Whitney. L.A. Reid isn't the one who wanted Bobby Brown to produce tracks on the album. He's not the one who was shouting "crack is wack" to Diane Sawyer. Or, the one who cussed Wendy Williams out during an interview. Patti complained about being done wrong when she was at MCA. And, now she's complaining about being done wrong at Def Jam. Def Soul artists aren't going to get the priority that a younger act is going to receive. Realistically, w/ promo how much do you think Patti would sell. Most artists have to do three million just to break even. I don't see Patti selling that. It's crazy for any artist to bank on selling cds. WE all know that's not where you make you're money. I hope it's not a pride thing for her because she was never a consistent seller. When you're Patti's age your mind needs to switch to touring. What happened w/ Cher, Santana, and Rod Stewart can't happen for everybody.

Thank you! Another voice of reason! (this is why I don't post like this on message boards lol)

Clive's done his share of fucking over legends as well. Don't you wonder where that Aretha Franklin duets album is? I'm glad Reid isn't a PR whore. It was nice to watch the World Music Awards w/out a video montage of L.A. Reid's career in music. That's something Clive just couldn't resist doing. He even made sure to give himself an award. And, what source do you have on L.A. Reid being fired? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. What people have you seen crapping on Reid? Please don't take off naming TLC and Toni Braxton. Reid knows like we all know that TLC is nothing w/out all three of the ladies. How has L.A. failed horribly? Bon Jovi is doing moderately well. The Killers have done fantastic, and Mariah Carey is the music industry story of the year. You're going to have to do better than a Roger Friedman piece to convince me otherwise.

No, a failure is something like Tommy Matolla going from the CEO of Sony to running Casablanca.

I really love Patti LaBelle, but truthfully, she hasn't made a great album in over a decade.I'm not surprised that her latest CD has flopped.Covers albums are a risk anyway...sometimes they do well, most times they fail. The sad fact is,most "old school" artists don't sell alot of records anymore. That's a fact.Just ask Al Green and Earth Wind and Fire, both of whom recently released new CDs.These artists and their record labels need to lower their expectations and face reality. As someone on this thread correctly pointed out, what happened with Santana and Cher can't happen to everybody.

Very good point.Patti should just concentrate on touring.I've always felt that the true power of her voice cannot be captured on a glossy, overproduced studio album, anyway.

Please feel free to get off of L.A. Reid Jock at anytime. Because of his incompetence Arista records was folded. He only had "Outkast" on the label at the end. Whoever gave this fool a job deserves whatever disaster he is going to bring to the picture.

I not going to go into how many careers this guy has ruined. The artist have already gone on record about this joker. The guy's track record speaks for itself and you can only be some underling that is probably going to get a fat golden parachute when you both get canned.

No one should be surprised that the industry is in the shape it is with an uneducated clown like this running a record label.

We can all thank L.A. Reid for the following great groups.

Bonecrasher.
Blu Cantrell
Koffee Brown.

If Patti can't sell records to anyone on the Earth than she should not have been brought on board at all. We all know that Prince got up and walked out a meeting with this idiot and that was one of the smartest moves he has ever made.

sorry ma, no underling here... Def Soul Classics was a boutique, a label set up for prestige, not dollars. Much like how Neil Young and Patti Smith still have major deals, but can't sell records... Once DefSoulClassics went away, they still had a finished record or two, so toss em out and let them do what they're gonna do... It is industry standard that when a new exec comes in to a label, most artists that have been sitting on a shelf get neglected...

Arista was not folded due to his "incompetence" but as a cost-saving issue because Sony and BMG were merging. To have so much redundancy in terms of A&R and promotion departments was ignorant. Yes, LA is free with a checkbook, no arguments there, and I am by no means a huge LA fan. he's like every other major label exec: lots of wins, and lots of failures... The music industry is like baseball: a player with a .300 average is a superstar, while those of us with regular jobs, if we had a 30% average, would be fired quickfast...

I'm not going to get into a pissing match on the internet over some guy nobody on this thread knows. i never post here, I just thought it was funny how so many people "knew" so much...

TTFN[/quote]
-----
cost-saving issue yes because of all the money Reid spent. You got more than a few artist bitching about this clown. Somebody knows what he is about.

Lord, what business skills does Clive have? He started out as a lawyer and parlayed his connections into something. L.A. started out as an artist and has probably seen all aspects of the industry. L.A. is one of a remaining few that understand artist development. Usher has come a long way from what he was when he started. The true test of who's better will come w/ Whitney Houston's record release. That's what everybody is waiting on. L.A. brought Mariah back which many considered an impossible feat. IF Clive can't do the same for Whitney people will be talking.

If Clive can't do the same for Whitney then that will be Whitney's fault. Drugs and a bad attitude will have a lot more to do with Whitney issues than Clive.

You can't send someone to Harvard for a 5 week crash course and expect them to be able to handle a budget and for all we know he was riding the tales of Babyface when he was an artist.

Get off of L.A. Reid jockstrap.

Get off Patti's tit. Arista was in a tailspin before L.A. even got there. The Whitney Houston contract was a dumb thing to do, but he had to keep her there. Clive was throwing jabs through the media questioning L.A.'s ability. It would have looked horrible to have the flagship artist of Arista leave. He kept Whitney and she acted a fool. Either way, it's not going to be looked at as Whitney's sole fault if the new album flops. The comparisons between her and Mariah will happen. And, w/ that will come the Clive Davis and L.A. Reid comparisons. Like I said, if Whitney doesn't pull it off people will be asking why Clive didn't get it right. Half the industry is on drugs and have bad attitudes. If Clive can't handle that he's not as good as he thinks he is.

I guess all the people on this board and at the party were on her tit to.

Arista was in tailspin before L.A. I think that is bullshit and if it is true Mr. Reid sent it into the ground.

He did not have to keep Whitney around. Whitney should have been told to hit the rehab clinic before she signed anything.

It will be Whitney fault. Clive did a lot to put out a clean image on Whitney and she has gone out of her way to wreak it. If she gets a second chance it is going to be her. She screws up and she will be out on her rear and Clive will kept on running the label. Life will pretty much go at J Records without her.

He was, however, the one who didn't help Whitney's songs get on the radio (yes, it's harder for older artists but there was no attempt). He was, however, slamming her not very long after the album came out! Very good business sense. No wonder you're a fan!

What happened w/ Cher, Santana, and Rod Stewart can't happen for everybody.

And thankfully those artists where not associated with Reid! Hmm....Two where helped by the man who he took over for....

That's not bullshit. Clive spends a lot of money his damn self. It took 20 mill to lift Alicia's debut off the ground. I'm going to stop arguing w/ you. You're busy posting what you think vs. what you know.

I post what I know because it is all based on facts and not fantasy.Reid does not know the lead single from what is supposed to be an artist that he is supporting. If you can defend that kind of imcopentence great. I say it is going to get Reid canned again and it is exactly what is wrong with the music industry today.
If you can't get rid of these types of clowns the industry will never completely turn around as it has not in the last five years. I know I am right about that and I know you will not come back to this board when Reid gets canned but, I will be here with a big I told you so.

I'm sorry but both Toni and TLC went broke and where on LAFace....seems to be too much of a coincidence. I was also very surprised that Patti came back on a major label when she could have thrived on a small label. That being said, he didn't know she recorded that song and that it was on her recent album. The album got no love and her last one was treated somewhat kindly (although I never understood releasing the Ron Isley single but not putting it on the album as promised...).

What about Whitney? What about the fact that Mariah's frist album tanked? Don't treat Ried as if he is some sort of genuis who does no wrong. He's fucked up a lot more careers than he helped!

A label head does not know and cannot be expected to know every detail about an album on his label???

how many label heads do YOU know????

Another case of disrespect for a R & B legend!

perhaps, but I'm sure Patti will be okay. She'll get a new deal elsewhere.Or she could always release her music independently.I'm sure her pal Prince would be more than willing to help her out in this area.

aight...remove the people and the industry for a second..if a ceo walks up to one of its partners and makes a fool of himself and embarasses the company where the industry is now laughing at you, publically, you got management issues.
