Jamie Cullum - Catching Tales "Thumbs up!"

I certianly prefer this one over his first album "Twentysomethin".. I really dig this album.. its a quirky little melodic album..

lots of piano, some great acoustic, and some funky beats for a jazz type album...

check this one out..

Album Hightlights

Get Your Way
London Skies (My favorite)
Photogrpah
Mind Trick
Catch The Sun
Our Day Will Come
My Yard

I loathe him as well. He seemed to be on every top 40 radio station when I was just in the U.S. and that made me despise him. lol Not that I purposely listen to top 40 stations, but you know when you're in someone else's car and all.... biggrin

He was just getting on my last nerve, and now he has a new album out and my husband put that one on the i-pod and it keeps popping up when I have it on shuffle. pissed There's one song "Get Your Way" which is "ok" I guess. For the sample of course.

I think what really put me over the edge was when I was at a friend's house for dinner last spring and he had covered Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, and Hendrix! "Wind Cries Mary"!!! Blasphemy! omfg And then to make matters worse, my friend had no idea that they were all covers. doh!

lol Its all good...

but I do think he is in his 20's (maybe early)

and I think what triggered me to him is the two songs..:

London Skies
Photograph

I would consider to anyone to at least hear those.. very unlike him, and jazz in general.. I dig it.. very 'folds like
I think with his "genre" is that he has a jazz flavor.. and i'm sure the man can do some nice jazz numbers.. but this isnt truely jazz.. its a cross over type music.. and some get into him thinking its gonna be a "Straight Jazz" type album.. he is more about trying different things.. so to speak..

This is one of my favorite albums this year. Although, I honestly preferred Twentysomething. I thought the original tunes on that album were a little more catchy, and the cover songs a little stronger. I'll very happily defend Jamie amongst all naysayers- the boy has a lot of talent. He's a great songwriter, arranger, and pianist.

And "Get Your Way" is the worst song on the album, IMO.

We just both like real songwriters. It's a gift that's gone unnoticed and is dying out these days. I agree, london skies and photograph are just great tunes. I also really love the last two on there....

Meh...

There was a time in my life when white boys could actually sing. Now, with all the Gavin DeGraw, Jamie Cullum, Jason Mraz, Howie Day, John Mayer warbles, I dunno.

Where's David Coverdale when you need him?

He really bores the shit out of me.

I love jazz when it is vibrant, honest and free.

This is just weak-ass pop shit with a jazz feel.

Nobody's going to disagree with you that this isn't true jazz music.

But come on, can you really put this on a level of your average Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls, and Blink 182 music? Just the piano playing alone puts it on a different level than "weak-ass pop shit".

I actually feel sorry for him, as he attracts a lot of unnecessary criticism. I remember seeing him about two or so years ago and he more than acquitted himself playing a straight ahead jazz set, albeit with the Radiohead and Jimi covers which were great. He is seriously talented as a pianist; he ended up accompanying various singers that night, and he is very aware of being economical with his playing, which is a rare talent for a vocal jazz accompanist. I'm not mad on his voice, as he sounds far too mannered and American (bearing in mind where's he from); but he's also a good little writer.
I also like the fact that he's not into operating within stylistic boundaries, which I would have thought should strike some resonance here...
