80's Song of the Day: "Love Plus One" by Haircut 100

Anybody remember this tune; it came out in 1982. Not only do I love the melody of this song, but the keyboards have a bit of a Carribean sound to them (heart that!). I even saw the video to this song several times, which made me love the song even more.

Love Plus One Lyrics:
I, I went off to the right
Without saying goodbye, goodbye
Where does it go from here?
Is it down to the lake I fear?
Ay ah ah ah ah ah
Ay ah ah ah ah ah
Then I call
Ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring)
La la love plus one
Ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring)
When I call love
Give love some soul
If I may be quite so bold
Where does it go from here?
Is it down to the lake I fear?
Ay ah ah ah ah ah
Ay ah ah ah ah ah
Then I call
Ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring)
La la love plus one
Ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring) ring (ring)
When I call love
Love plus one

falloff Just found this review about the song online (cracked me up laughing, big time!).

Artist: Haircut 100
Title: Love Plus One
Year: 1982
Synopsis: A bunch of total geeks in Hawaiian shirts dance around like fuckin' idiots in this pointless exercise in bad taste.
Analysis: In the early days of MTV, the producers didn't have enough quality videos to fill up 24 hours of time and so they occasionally aired just about any piece-of-shit video they could find such as this "hit" from the album Pelican West. Who could forget the lead singer's shit-eating grin? Every time this dopey video came on I had a strong urge to throw a beer bottle at the screen. The song itself boasts some of the worst lyrics ever written in the history of rock 'n' roll. Something about someone leaving without saying goodbye and going "down to the lake I fear." Then he makes a phone call and it rings forever. Huh?
Sample Lyrics: "Then I call/Ring ring ring ring/La la love plus one/Ring ring ring ring/When I call-love . . ."
Coda: Formed in England in 1980, Haircut 100 faded out about as quickly as they hit the scene. In addition to "Love Plus One," the group had another annoying video called "Favorite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)." It sounded exactly like the same song. In 1983, Haircut 100 suffered a severe blow when Heyward left the band to pursue a solo career (one that went absolutely nowhere). They tried a new lead singer but by 1984 they discovered that no one was listening and they disbanded quickly. Does anyone still listen to Haircut 100's music? God, I really hope not. It's too pathetic to even think about. Where are they now? Who the fuck cares?

Comments: "'Love Plus One' is one of my favorite videos of all time. Of course it's pointless, of course its kooky, but its also a great-sounding song. If all you haters who criticize it because of its stupid lyrics want to read something intellectually stimulating, go find your old high school trig book. This song is about fun--and even the haters have to love Nick Heyward swinging from a vine in the video!"

falloff falloff I admit the lyrics are dumb, but I love the melody of this song, and find myself singing along to it whenever I hear it. Does anybody else dig this tune?

Hey DavidEye! I actually kind of forgot about this song, until I bought a 7-CD 80's compilation of hits, and this song was on there. I was like, "Oh yeah, I forgot about this song!" You're right, this song is a must-have for any 80's compilation, or for anyone who loves 80's music.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

touched Wow, I'm genuinely surprised that people still remember this track. Nice to know that it's not forgotten about completely.

If you like the song, "Love Plus One", you'll love "Whistle Down the Wind", it's a slow tempo song, but it's also very catchy.

Just found this little blurb about Nick Heyward on the internet:

Nick Heyward (vocals, guitar) left his band Haircut 100 just when they were cruising through the pop charts in the U.K. Instead of destroying his career, the move actually provided him with more artistic credibility. Heyward was born on May 20, 1961, in Beckenham, Kent, England. In 1980, Heyward formed the new wave group Haircut 100. Haircut 100 became as well-known for the preppie outfits they wore as much as MTV bubblegum like "Love Plus One" and "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)," two of the most endearing songs of the '80s. Both singles hit the Top Ten in Britain in 1982. Heyward recorded one LP for Haircut 100, Pelican West, and then departed for a solo career. Once on his own, Heyward's work lost much of Haircut 100's teen gloss; the music was still catchy, but the lyrics were more adult and introspective, as displayed on tracks like "Whistle Down the Wind" from his 1983 solo debut North of a Miracle. Heyward's solo output in the '80s didn't have much commercial impact in the U.S.; however, his popularity — and pin-up appeal — in England was kept intact by North of a Miracle. But it was temporary: 1986's Postcards From Home and 1988's I Love You Avenue didn't grab listeners. In 1994, the Beatles-like "Kite" on From Monday to Sunday was a surprise smash on American modern rock stations. Heyward continued to record albums in the '90s, none of which received attention outside of his loyal fan base. In 2001, Heyward released Open Seseme Seed with Greg Ellis.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
