Funny review of Metallica documentary, Some Kind Of Monster. I don't think this was ever mentioned here, so I thought I should share this. It is a funny review of the documentary, by critic Chuck Eddy; who sadly is also a classic Prince hater. But he does write well. He is spot on with this review. The overrated movie was really pathetic. Nothing worse then a metal band going soft.

i've worked with chuck eddy before. i think he's a far better editor than a writer, but he clearly knows his stuff.

I really like Chuck Eddy - I admire a critic who'll not only openly defend Boston, but defend Boston's second album. Not that I like Boston or anything, I hasten to add, but I wish there was a bit more populism in rock criticism and a touch less snobbery, if you know what I mean. As for his writing - I always found his stuff pretty entertaining in his Creem magazine days. I don't think he's a great stylist or anything, though I certainly find him more easily digestible that Bob Christgau - but that's not saying much, I guess. ![]() EDIT - I completely forgot to ask - how/where/in what capacity did you work with him, if you don't mind me asking? I can't quite bring myself to hate Christgau - I probably would never have discovered the Go-Betweens, who I absolutely love, if not for his relentless advocacy of that band. I don't think I've followed him closely enough to judge his consistency, but I know I find his writing very irritating. The only issue of the V.V. I buy faithfully is the P&J poll, and every year Christgau's editorial piece leaves me completely exasperated. I don't find his short reviews for his consumer guide column any less irksome - why can't he just describe the record and say what he likes/dislikes about it, for god's sake?
