Music critics insist on telling us what constitutes greatness from an artist or band. Those acts who have helped define and revolutionise the music of their relevant genres. I know theres so many acts i've been told are 'great' yet i've off the top of my head i can sing maybe one or two songs, and some i've never heard any songs of. My list of band i have yet to check out.

The Velvet Underground - Are they actually any good or is it music snobbery. I can't say i've heard any of their music. Probably the most well known act i've yet to listen to.

The Replacements - Never heard a track

Husker Du - Someone's recently ran a thread about them. Never heard a song, though i've heard other stuff Bob Mould did.

Theres probably more but right now those spring to mind. Anyone got any others?!

The Dead. I hang around tons of people who LOVE them, but I've just never bothered to dig in.

I'd say Zeppelin II for lots of bluesy, hard rock or Physical Graffiti because it kicks ass, is a double album, and has a good mix of rock, blues, folk, country, tripped-out hypnotizing tracks such as "In The Light", "Kashmir", and "In My Time of Dying", and also it has "Ten Years Gone" which IMO is one of their most beautiful songs.

They did 2 great albums that I highly recommend " Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty". If you like, say, The Eagles, you'd probably appreciate it. The thing is these albums are not representative of most of their catalog. If you listen to their live CDs, it'll range from brilliant to boring.. often in the same song !!

Most will recommend Tim, Pleased to Meet Me or Let It Be. They had a best-of/rarities collection out at one point (All for Nothing/Nothing for All) - not sure if it's still in print. Myself, I've outgrown them.

I highly recommend the first 2 Velvet Underground albums- both are classics, in my opinion.

Ironic, isn't it. They rocked so much harder than the Dead, and yes, are actually way more boring. It shocked the hell out of me when I found out that "Desperado" is really under 3 minutes. That is the LONGEST 3 minute song ever recorded. It lasts a lifetime.

I think the Dead had more texture to their sound, probably because Garcia played so many instruments. Which is the one thing I will give him credit for. "Teach Your Children." Probably the best steel guitar ever recorded. Played by Jerry Garcia.

Actually, the only Eagles song that I actually like is "One of These Nights," which is pretty damn funky. But, I poop on the rest of their music. And I poop on Joe Walsh for joining the Eagles. He was too good for them.

All you have to do is listen to sound snippets of different bands and artists and you can get a gist about how they sound.

I do think the Velvet Underground are a bit overrated, but Heroin is a classic. Really bores into you.
