I have band shirts of:
Prince ("Purple Rain" at Hot Topic and a Musicology Tour shirt) Duran Duran (two tour shirts from 2005 and a "Rio" shirt) Def Leppard (bought it at JCPenney) Rolling Stones (ditto) Rick James (Hot Topic purchase, but so worth it!) The Police (ditto) Depeche Mode (ditto) Backstreet Boys (I have about seven of theirs because, hey, I was 16 and in love! And I saw them in concert a month ago and got a new shirt.) I know band members and more than five songs of each of those groups/artists. I do have my eye on an INXS shirt. I am obsessed with the band circa Michael Hutchence. Not sure how I feel about this "Rock Star" show, but anyway, I want the shirt. Tonight I'm seeing Coldplay and will probably get a shirt. Might also get a Franz Ferdinand shirt tomorrow night at their show. It's hard for someone like me who wasn't old enough to go to actual concerts, so the Hot Topic shirts are the closest thing I can get. I'm real grateful for that store, actually.

They went to a David Allan Coe show together and talked a lot about music. He most definitely IS a Misfits fan. He has a very eclectic taste in music. It's a jungle out there.

A lot of the racist songs you've heard are probably miscredited to him, as has happened to him quite a bit in the mp3 age. However, unfortuntely, some of them probably actually are by him. It was one of the first things I asked him about, because I was a huge fan of his for many, many years before I discovered those songs, and it sickened me to think that I had been supporting this type of person for so long. Well, the response that I got was, well, it was. It may or may not be sincere. According to him, those records were meant to satire a lot of the rednecks that had started showing up at his shows in the late 70s. Unfortunately for him, I suppose, nobody got the joke, which, I must admit, wasn't really funny in the first place. He said that in hindsight, he regretted ever recording those albums, because he has spent the last twenty-plus years defending himself against charges of being a racist. After talking to him pretty extensively, I don't believe that he is a racist. But I'm can't really say what his motives were in recording those songs. They are the only Coe songs that I don't own. And, honestly, he had to know that there would be repercussions for that, even if he did record them with the intention to satire the rednecks. It was a stupid decision. It's a jungle out there.

That was the same conclusion that I came to. He's actually written quite a few songs in his later years that rebut the racist songs. "Song For the Year 2000" (color does not matter/black or white, or red or brown/it takes all kinds of people) and "Nothin' to Lose, pt 1" (stop burning crosses, man, that ain't where it's at/I ain't no racist, no, I ain't into that/I used the n-word back when I was a kid/I can't take back all of those bad things I did). But honestly, at this point, I think everyone has pretty much formed their own opinion about him. So, I'm not certain what the point is. Ironically, though, he does seem to be wittling his audience down to a very select few. The people who hate the racists songs don't listen to him anymore. And the people who actually did like the racist songs have stopped listening because of the about face he has made. So, I guess really, he's singing the new stuff to clear his own conscience, because most everybody else has stopped listening. It's a jungle out there.

He can apologize a million times and make all of the "we are the world" types songs in the world, but to some people he'll forever be a racist just by that one song. If he says he a change man, then I guess people will just have to take his word for it. Like you said it probably doesn't matter now though. "as prince goes poom poom poom poom
