Any particular type of metal that you are looking for? I usually lean toward the darker stuff like: Type O Negative, Lacuna Coil, Kittie (not their first album), Nightwish, Cradle Of Filth, etc.
My favorite band at the moment that seems to get classified as metal is Deadsy. Elijah Blue Allman (yes, that Elijah Blue Allman) is the ringleader and describes their sound as 'undercore', but I like to call it 'new wave-doom-metal'.

I would recommend Kittie's last album only. How about Dimmu Borgir? Their 'Death Cult Armageddon' album was pretty good. I also like Lullacry, but they are more poppy.

Metal has become pretty stupid, so I'd suggest just going back and listening to the old stuff.
The Ronnie James Dio Black Sabbath is good. Classic Scorpions can't be beat. Iron Maiden kick it. Van Halen are amazing. Look for the first album by the group Riot. Don't be critical lilgish.
Opeth is great; a wonderful use of creepy acoustic guitar and crunch death metal. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Venom : Welcome to Hell
And they're not kidding. It's hideous, horrible noise. But it is metal, of sorts. I challenge anyone to listen to the entire album all in one go. Can't be done. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I kinda feel like I'm outing myself here, but I still have a completely unironic, non-postmodern love for this album:

as well u should, Ritchie Blackmore and Dio... by the end of the album Dio really takes it home. It's Majestic, you really don't notice there's only a few tracks.
