There is no "best" between these 2.
They were each "unique" in their own ways.

cool

It seems to me that Jimi wasn't too interested in social issues. He was more into universal, cosmic themes. Jimi's my favorite and I'll leave it at that.

You can't even put these two on the same planet, much less the same reply. No two more different people exist in popular music.

on the one hand, a true and spiritual seeker, master musician, inspiration to countless other musicians in a career that extends through five decades.

on the other hand, Ma-friggin-donna.

I think I might SLIGHTLY prefer Sly because he was a better singer and had better melodies (IMHO) BUT both are among my favorite musicians of all time. I see them really as two sides of the same coin, two extremely talented multifarious musicians who refused to be pigeon-holed and did their best to reunite the racially and stylistically divergent strands of Rock N Roll. As for a more academic comparison, ala some of the other "Prince vs. so and so" threads I've stumbled into... here I go:

vocals-Sly was both a more technically accomplished, and a more creative vocalist. Jimi has a very good, and very underrated voice, but Sly's voice is just so much more versatile and idiosycratic.

musicianship-This is a very tough call, both were proficient on multiple instruments, Jimi was without a doubt the superior guitar player but it's hard to compare them on other instruments for various reasons; we have few tracks that can tell us just exactly how good a keyboardist or bassist Jimi was, and he never played the drums on any finished song, while Sly played all kinds of instruments, but the liner notes almost never specified which ones on which songs. I think I may have to give this one to Jimi simply because he was just about the undisputed greatest on at least one instrument.

production-Sly was a producer even before he formed the Family Stone, whereas Jimi wasn't in full control of his production until Ladyland which was his last non-posthumous release, but then again, that one album did a lot to pioneer the recording studio as a tool of arrangement/composition, and what he did on 1983 A Merman I should turn to be alone is just mindblowing. then again, I've never seen an artist produce albums with as drastically opposite feels as Sly did (someone who didn't know any better would probably be baffled that the same artist who recorded the sunsplash of Dance To tHe Music, also recorded the subterranean darkness of There's A Riot Going On). I think I'll call this a draw.

songwriting-I think Sly had catchier melodies, while Jimi usually had better riffs. Both were extremely eclectic, Jimi's songs were more stylistically distinct from song to song, while Sly's music as a whole was a more blended mixture of different components, both were influenced by acid rock, soul, jazz and blues. Both were great lyricists, Jimi being better at dreamy, psychedelic imagery, Sly better at social message and countercultural satire. Once again, I all it a draw.

Live Performance-Jimi's live guitar performances were out of sight, but I think that Sly & the Family Stone was, as a whole, a more fun act. Then again, stuff like "machine gun" and any live version of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" still makes guitar players' heads spin. One way or the other I'd pay good money to find footage of them performing TOGETHER drool

That's like asking, "Miles or Coltrane?"

It's impossible to answer.

How can you?

It's like the last fight b/w Neo and Smith in Matrix Revolutions, where neither could best the other at the beginning. Comparing Sly and Jimi feels like that.
