Back to topic. Thriller is not one of my favourites of him but cant deny it's an amazing record. Rock fans love it, RNB fans love it, Pop fans love it. It's a very diverse record that's got something for everyone...

It's pop, rock, rnb, funk all rolled into one album. And there's the jazzy lady in my life there too.

It's just fucking mind blowing.

I was in a nightclub a few weeks ago and the DJ surprised everyone by playing "Billie Jean".That song is over 20 years old,but people still went crazy. The dancefloor suddenly became packed! The DJ seemed surprised, and he played "Wanna Be Startin Something" a few songs later. These songs still sound as fresh and vital as they did in 1983!

At this nightclub, even the younger folks (who were probably in diapers when 'Thriller' came out, lol) got up to dance when 'Billie Jean' came on.I think people simply miss hearing good music at a club. After listening to the bland midtempo R&B and boring hip-hop garbage,it was so refreshing to hear "Billie Jean" and "Wanna Be Startin Something".

yeah they're all probably getting sick of today's stars making big dance videos fully choreographed for their silly mid-tempo rnb meets hiphop crap.

yea I Saw some dancers dancing to Wanna Be Startin Something in the subway. I was like oh sit, what is this hot song...and like damn, it sounded fresh. It just shows you how they played that shit to death back then.

It's been a while since I dug MJ but NO ONE can mess with an album as incredible as Thriller. There was no filler on that album at all. I can play that album from start to finish and still want more. Thriller and Off The Wall are in my Top 10 favorite albums. I dig OTW slightly more than Thriller but by half a point for the funk factor. The diversity in style, MJ's voice, the music itself, Michael was on point and I truly, truly miss that in his music today. He needs to get a "Fuck You" attitude and make an album that focuses on him and only him with the people who can best get his sound out not the "hot" producer of the day who doesn't know shit about him and them trying to get credit for making a "hot" song with Michael Jackson. Fuck them. Now I don't know if he can ever do that but even if he did and it didn't sound great to me, I'd respect that soooo much. Half an effort could make me a fan of his music again.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

You don't have to tell us this Dave. Thriller is still good today. With 40 million units out in the world a hell of a lot of people love that record and all the bash the 80's crap will not change that.

For the last time, this has nothing to do with when it came out.

Like a Virgin, Purple Rain, whatever; take your pick. I consider plenty of popular 80's albums incredible.

Also, no one's "dissecting" Thriller here. I just threw on the headphones, listened to it, and came away disappointed.

I'd take The Lady In My Life over Thriller, Baby Be Mine and P.Y.T. in a heartbeat. The Girl Is Mine ain't so great, tho'. I'll grant you that. smile

Funnily enough, when Thriller was first released, Michael said that Baby Be Mine was the track he was most pleased with. Very strange.

And yes, I'd take The Lady In My Life over Thriller any day.

"The Lady In My Life" is NOT a filler track. It's one of MJ's best slow jams ever, and it's become a Quiet Storm staple. His sister Janet stole the music/melody for her own song "Funny How Time Flies".

I love "The Girl Is Mine".It's a nice, breezy midtempo pop song. It's not one of the best songs on the album, but I think it was a wise move to release it as the first single. They saved the stronger singles for later. He repeated this strategy in 1987 with the 'Bad' album....releasing the schmaltzy ballad "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" as the first single, even though it clearly wasn't one of the strongest tracks.

Hey,it still amazes me that there are only two songs from this album that didn't become singles...

"Baby Be Mine"
"The Lady In My Life"

I wonder if those tunes were ever considered for single release. As "hot" as MJ was in 1982/83,even those songs would have went Top 10 with no problem.

Nahh, The Girl is Mine blows.

"The dog gone girl is mine" barf

It feels SO self aware of its innocence and cuteness. Can't stand it.

MJ + Paul = bad songs

Yeah,I remember LL Cool J sampling this song.It has a classic melody, and it's one of Rod Temperton's greatest compositions.

But even this song was somewhat influential.A few years after it came out,two female vocalists that I can't recall (Linda Ronstadt and Tammy Wynette? Kim Carnes and Barbara Mandrill? It was somebody like that) recorded a duet where they were fighting over the same man.And of course,in 1998,Brandy and Monica recorded "The Boy Is Mine".

I rank this song right up there with gems like "I Can't Help It" and "Liberian Girl" music

Back then,it got alot of airplay on our local radio stations. You would have thought it was a single!
