Your Given Tear Jerker When you feel down and you really want to cry but can't...
Do you have a song you put on to help you cry? A song so filled with melancholy and pain that is just makes you cry? Or just a melody that does it for you? Mine is Nina Hagen Band's Naturträne, a song from Nina is a classicly trained singer that went punk, meaning she gurgles, she screams, let's her voice go high. At the end of this song she actually makes a chicken sound... The song is awfully beautiful because of it is haunting melody, Nina's passionate performance and the lyrics, which I think are one of the most beautiful I ever heard. I can just imagine a person like Björk doing this... or Tori on just piano... Oh, and it is in German. This song, when in the proper mood, can make me bawl like a baby. Aaaahhhh.... Through the open window I can see The tiny clouds hovering in the sky The wind is blowing, my nose is freezing ... a few exhaust pipes are spluttering. Ah, the sun is going down Red and gold, as it should be I look down to the street below And see a friend standing there Suddenly my heart feels heavy I just need to see birds fluttering And my eyes turn up to the sky How it jurts my soul - how beautiful! Nature in the evening, a peaceful town Tormented soul, the tears flow It all makes me feel so feeble And makes the tears flow even more Aaah....!!

Joni's new version of "Both Sides Now" has done it to me on several occasions and that's just been in the past few months.
"Dream Angus" by Annie Lennox never fails. And of course, there's "Cooling"...

The Cure - A Letter To Elise
Somehow it just comes off to me as the most melancholic, beautiful song ever. Playing the sombre end of Brighter Death Now when feeling miserable will seriously fuck me up though. Instrumental music can be as good tear-jerking stuff as sung music with lyrics.

I never let myself cry. Call me old-fashioned, but seeing men cry kinda makes me sick.
But when the Beatles' Julia hits me in the right way, I can get a little choked up. Same thing with Carol King's So Far Away - female singer/songwriters are definitely not a mainstay with me, but I do think Tapestry is one of the few albums I've heard that is open and emotional without being wimpy or nauseating. Seeing is a different thing. If a guy cried publicly in front of me, I'd sure punch him in the face.

It's from a rainforest benefit album called "Carnival" from about '96 or so. The song is a Scottish traditional and just about the sweetest thing ever.

Ooh, that's cold. for real. I have no problem with men crying. I'd rather see a man cry than pretend as if nothing ever gets to him and keeps thing bottled up. I'll never understand that whole "macho man" deal, but I'm just a girl so I wouldn't know. High fivin, talking shit, but you're going home alone arentcha? It's just you and your hand tonight

A LOT of songs are tear jerkers for me. I'll only list two for now though....
Under the Ivy- Kate Bush (I guess it depends on my mood, but most of the time I cry) Watching You Without Me-Kate Bush (the title alone says you're in for it) When I was younger Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" used to make me cry.....don't really know why. It's not meant to be a sad song, but it's a beautiful one. I can listen to it now without even shedding a tear. for it [Edited 8/26/05 14:37pm] High fivin, talking shit, but you're going home alone arentcha? It's just you and your hand tonight

oh god, you too. It is nothing wrong with a man crying for God's sake. As long as the time is suitable for crying, but if he's crying everyday for no good reason, then he'd better look into some Zoloft. High fivin, talking shit, but you're going home alone arentcha? I saw you post Hey Jupiter.....I think I'm almost the only fan who doesn't like this song I don't depise it, but it's definitely not on my list of favorites. Kashka from Baghdad Lives in sin, they say, With another man, But no one knows who. Old friends never call there. Some wonder if life's Inside at all-- If there's life inside at all. But we know the lady who rents the room. She catches them calling a la lune. At night They're seen Laughing, Loving. They know The way To be Happy. They never go for walks. Maybe it's because The moon's not bright enough. There's light in love, you see. I watch their shadows, Tall and slim, In the window opposite. I long to be with them. 'Cause when all the alley-cats come out, You can hear music from Kashka's house. At night They're seen Laughing, Loving. They know The way To be Happy. 'Watching every night.* Don't you know they're seen? Won't you let me laugh? Let me in your love. 'Watching every night. Don't you know they're seen? Won't you let me laugh? Let me in your love. 'Watching every night. Don't you know they're seen? Won't you let me laugh? Let me in your love. 'Watching every night. Don't you know they're seen? Won't you let me laugh?'

OMG - that song is so sad! The melody and the way Kate Bush sings it with so much emotion in her voice. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
