George Michael: Faith vs. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1

Ah, post-Wham! George before the record company fights (just) and when he was still a sex symbol for young women...

I always see people list LWP in their all time favourite albums ranks, but never Faith.

Personally I don't think LWP as anything as beautiful as 'Father Figure' or 'One More Try' on it, nor an album track as great as 'Look At Your Hands'.

One thing though, they're both in dire need of remasters.

I like both Faith and LWP as albums.

He never made another album that had the impact and quality of any of these two albums, both very different in their scope and message. Even though some songs he released after are still classics, like Jesus To A Child and Outside, none of his album projects ever made the grade again.

I must admit that to me Faith speaks just a little bit more cuz it was a bit more edgy, even though it is less ageless sounding than LWP, which sounds timeless. Faith is very much 80's, but hey! So is my musical taste...

Monkey. Fantasy. Father Figure. Awwwww. I Want Your Sex. My sister; see; he's not gay! Me; that's a fashion model. Hand To Mouth. Kissing A Fool. mushy Swoon. That short bliss we call Faith, the song. Simple, straight forward, makes you wanna dance, romance. He even said he listened to alot of Prince while recording it... 87. Well, well, well.

How can you go wrong with an album containing the song "Heal The Pain?" I vote for LWPV1!

I have tremendous love for both albums but LWP wins by a hair because of such haunting tracks like Cowboys and Angels, Praying for Time, and I love his version of They Won't Go When I Go.

Love both but LWP gets the edge. He could've released it any time within the last 15 years and it would still sound fantastic.

Faith is a GREAT debut (solo) album, though.

nod I agree. Also, considering his commercial status at the time (Faith sold 15m copies and generated 6 US no.1!), he's been very brave to launch an album like this without promotion (Praying for time - the first single - hadn’t a video) and deciding to not appear at all in Freedom’90 (one of the best videos ever, IMHO)

I agree also.. biggrin

Listen is my favorite George Michael CD. Here is my rank:

Listen Without Prejudice
Older
Faith
Patience

All of those are pretty decent records all things considered..and Listen Without Prejudice (imo) has some of the best music ever recorded.

I like them both quite a bit, but I'd pick Faith over Listen without Prejudice. That's when Georgie started to go a bit too batty for me. I understand that he was trying to extend his vision and be more worldly and less self-centered, but somehow it came off as a bit self-serving. It's hard to explain. But I do love that album, especially, Cowboys and Angels, Heal the Pain, his take on They Won't Go When I Go, and Freedom 90.

I love every track on Faith. Musically, it also seems a little more adventurous than LWP. I always think of I Want Your Sex as one of those Prince songs that Prince never did. Father Figure (my all-time favorite song of his), One More Try, Hand to Mouth, Monkey, Hard Day, the title track...all classic tunes. I just find it to be a more memorable album than its successor.

I can understand that. It probably is more memorable. LWP is more samey. It hangs together more as a cohesive whole. Faith has more tracks that jump out at you.

LWP is also more of a downer. I was all about the sad, sad music in high school (I was about to enter 12th grade when this came out), but these days I can't really take a whole album's worth of it. At the time I remember loving it. Now, I like it.

Yeah, it's pretty soulful, introspective stuff. But it's not all sad. Freedom and Soul Free for example. They're deep. But not sad.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1! music
I'm a big fan of his more moody, soulful tracks like Mothers Pride, Cowboys and Angels and it has strong tracks like Freedom and Heal The Pain, wich I love.
I don't like his They Won't Go When I Go cover though. And Soul Free is just funky.

I think people not mentioning it is cuz this is an album vs album thingie. I tried to describe the reasons why I liked one album over the other...

BTW< I am a fickle choser; I might like LWP better than Faith tomorrow...

Ah. It's PERSONAL, LoL

Make it it's own thread then! Post the lyrics, tell us what is so dear about it. I do it every now and then too. Just did it for Me Touch Myself. Love that little itty ditty.
