at the time of release it was very underrated, people were expecting another 'License To Ill'.....Fact is that the Beasties were way ahead of their time, right now 'Boutique' is considered a classic. Also, this was one of the first times that the Dust Bros. were being introduced to a broader public as a producer-duo. Years later they would do it again with Beck's 'Odelay'! Buy it, a must have!

Well, personally I prefer their 90's work. "Check Your Head" will always be the best Beastie Boys album to me. "Paul's Boutique" is great, but I feel like they more fully realized the ideas they started on this with later albums. It was a huge jump forward for them, but I feel like it's a little overrated within their catelogue. Oh and between VU and the Beasties, buy both!

good god, if you're into the beasties and you don't have this album, you need to go find a late nite record shop and go buy it, now! a total head trip of an album, with the most tripped out lyrics and beats anywhere. this album could be released today and it would still sound ahead of it's time. and there's a million samples on it, not puffy style samples, but like building tracks with legos. it's brilliant. and yes, with headphones too, this album is GODLIKE.
Keep your headphones on.

I read somewhere that this album would be virtually impossible to release today because the cost of clearing all those samples would be like a zillion dollars.

I had this album in High School, ( a black High School ) nobody else had it, everybody thought it sucked, kids were more into Rakim and Public Enemy at the time. It didn't chart very well either, but I LOVE IT. I was amazed by the last track and how all of the songs segued together.. B Boy Boullabias. Now it's considered a classic. The production set a new standard for "layered" sampling. Thanks to the dust brothers. This album is like one long Hip Hop psychadelic trip.
