ARCADE FIRE so how many arcade fire converts do we have on the org now?....are they going to become mainstream or are they too good for that?

Haiti, Rebellion (Lies), and Laika should be huge hits.

I'm a converted admirer, not a full-fleged nut for them yet. But, yeah, I think they're too true to themseleves to ever be mainstream, unfortunately. Definitely looking forward to their next move.

It has taken me a long time to get into this band. I've had the CD for months and have enjoyed it, but I didn't immediately connect with it. That being said, I have returned to it occasionally and it has slowly grabbed a better hold on me.
I have tix to see them live this fall and that should either make or break the deal. Judging from the reactions of folks on here who have seen them live, I'm betting it will "make it" for me. Oh and, I would be HUGELY surprised if the become "mainstream" they seemed destined to hover just below that line. Which is fine by me

I'm in that number. | |

They never took hold for me like i was hoping they would. We're living in a time that anything "left of center" is considered good even when the center is comprised of shite.

i love them. Tunnels is an incredibly brilliant track.
I don't think they will ever be "mainstream", but I could see them having a Radiohead type mass following if they continue making music as stellar as their debut. A long shot, but possible.

What does their new song sound like? I read a positive review of it in Blender or Spin, but I've yet to hear it. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

That's pretty much where I'm at with this band as well - I think it's a fine album, but it's never really become a passion or an obsession with me. I'm going to see them this September, and perhaps that will be the catalyst that makes be bond with the record. I've been kind of mystified by the unabashed adoration so many people have expressed for them - though it's definitely well crafted, Funeral still feels a little too aloof and distant and cerebral to me. My mind could change, of course...

How good is that other album of theirs? Don't know the name, not Funeral (that one I love!)?

I'm not aware of another album. But they do have an EP. Yep. I checked it on amazon, it's a self-titled debut-EP. Is it similar?

Beauties like No Cars Go, My Heart's An Apple and Old Flame are part of their live set as well, so you might want to check this EP before seeing them live.

My Heart's An Apple and No Cars Go made me a fan... the drums in No Cars Go reminds me of 'Setting Sun' by chem bros.... I'm only 2.25 songs in, so that's my thought so far that and the chick really DOES sound bjork-ish

a few listens thru and I'm really liking the E.P.
it has actually grabbed my ear more than Funeral, for whatever that's worth. It just has, hmmmmm, this sense of urgency to it that grabbed me in the first listens. Well that or I'm feeling "urgent" and projecting it unto the music, but whatevs

my fav track is "cars and telephones". i'm not sure if that one is released (yet). such a pretty song. both the album and ep are great. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I have yet to hear the whole album but based on the couple songs I downloaded, I'm not impressed. I dont' get why people talk about these guys like they're the second coming of the Beatles. I've heard they're really good live, so maybe that's the missing piece of the puzzle. but still, the singer sounds like Neil Young and the songs aren't anywhere as good as Neil Young songs. i just saw them last nite supporting franz ferdinand in prince's street gardens in front of edinburgh castle - whilst i pass that view every day going 2 and from work (it's around the corner from my office) -it's still an impressive backdrop 2 a concert, especially when it's all lit up in lights in the dark (but also fantastic when having a picnic in the sun with bryan ferry playing on the bandstand)
arcade fire were rather excellent live. i didnt time the show, which was shortert than thier typical 80 min show (they probably played about an hour), but it was a very engrossing live set, and i was quite surprised about how well they went down in front of the franz ferdinand fans, as thier music is the antithesis of franz's snappy short punky pop tunes, or at least on record. they r a lot more lively in concert than on record, a very energetic performance, drawing similar comparisons 2 perhaps spiritualised and the polyphonic spree who really seem 2 come in2 thier own during live performances. musically there r also some strong talking heads influences coming thru, but not vocally or lyrically, and the tunes r not the catchy poppy style of TH hits as 4 the album, i must say that at 1st i wasn't hugely impressed, i played it a few times in the office as it was mellow morning music 2 start the day, and didnt play it 4 a while, but dug it out again recently and played it on the way 2 work and appreciated it a lot more. some of the best albums have been like that 2 me, i didnt like them at 1st, and now they r some of my favorites. i'm not sure if thats going 2 b the case here, but if u have the cd and haven't played it a while, dig it out when ure in a mellow mood and give it another try if u get the chance 2 c them live on the other hand, give the cd a few plays 2 get accustomed 2 the sound, and then prepare 2 b thrilled by 1 of the most interesting of the new up and coming bands, and then u can brag 2 ure friends that u saw them play some tiny shithole long b4 every1 else say them on their year long arena tour, earning some serious geek kudos amongst fellow virgins

The British public is so superior to the States when it comes to music it's not even funny. I hear shit on BBC that I know doesn't get played on the radio here. I've given up on American FM.

I adore Funeral. It helped me get through some very rough patches. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!
