Which Artists Do You Enjoy....

only on album (recording)? there are some artists whose albums i have and i thoroughly enjoy. but i can't stand seeing them perform (t.v.) and wouldn't pay or be paid to see them live. well if you paid me enough i would; but i wouldn't enjoy it. hmph!
wether it be that they're a boring live performer, always fucks up the songs vocally or over sings, or just down right bugs the living f*ck out of you?

hmmm do tell...inquiring minds want to know!

This is pretty strange to me also. Maybe, its the generation we grew up in perhaps. We're used to hearing real music that can be performed live and not just on wax/CD.

if a group doesn't have good stage presence or can't get the place going in a live setting, i really don't need to spend good money to see them live when i can just sit at home and enjoy their music without having to deal with pushy, rude audience members and over-priced icky domestic beer or over-priced flat soda that would just get knocked out of my hand by some jackass anyway.

i would never see fischerspooner again because they sucked live, but i love their albums - the new one is nice.

i'm glad i got to see new order, but i don't know if i'd see them again. it was a good show, but a little less than exciting, other than the fact that i've never had a chance to see them before and probably never will again.

really, if i know a band is just gonna kinda stand there and recite their music as faithfully as possible with no kind of theatre or drama or energy or acknowledgement of the audience whatsoever, i'd really rather stay home.

oddly enough, that kinda describes a pixies show (except they've got great energy), but watching them live kicks my ass. go figure.

I saw Doug E. Fresh live back in 1985. He was the opening act for New Edition and Morris Day (solo). During that time, he had out the 12 Inch, "The Show", which sounded great on record but horrible live. The music was pre-recorded and muffled and his microphone was turned up way too far for the music. When the next act, New Edition, came on with a live band, the music was much louder, powerful, and clearer.

By the way, New Edition was the headliner for that concert but Morris Day conveniently showed up late and New Edition had to go on before him. evillol

did you think they put on a really dynamic show? i thought it was good, and the fact that i got to go to a new order show was, cheesy as it may sound, an honor - but it was pretty straight-forward stuff...which is fine, but not really my cup of blood as far as being a live experience i'd want to re-live.

i'd probably have had a different response if i was dancing with you guys, but it would still be more about dancing with you guys than how interesting the live show was.

I can see what you're getting at about enjoying it cuz it may be your only chance to see them and it feeling like an honor...

I felt that way too. But it was also kinda what I expected. Just like their music. Just like their artwork. Just like their attitude. No frills, no bullshit, just laddish DIY ethic. Yeah, they don't have a lot of star quality or charisma or looks (anymore). But that's part of why I like them. There's something really pure and honest about what they do. I was just ecstatic to see some of my heroes in the flesh and sounding great. For me, it was one of the most exciting shows I've been to, but remember that I also was on a lot of drugs and had no sleep. So maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. lol

naw, i just think you appreciate the musicianship of live shows maybe a bit more than i do. i've had a lot of friends who really get off on watching people play, noting HOW people play, watching technique and all that good stuff. i think that's great. i wish i had that kind of appreciation. i do, i think, just a little bit. i think i look at the staging and the connection between band and crowd and what the live performance brings that just listening to the album can't. this is why i freak out at bowie and prince shows. they have the musical proficiency and they also are able to project something enormous just by walking on stage. robert smith can pull it off, too, i think...

I appreciate all that too. But I can't really say what it is that I look for in a concert or what makes it a great experience for me. It's so many factors and even then, when I add them all up, they still don't describe a great show. Overall, I'd say it's the emotion I walk away with from these shows. It's the work that I put into getting there, sometimes the travel, sometimes the wait involved, sometimes never seeing an artist before (New Order), sometimes working at getting the best seat/spot. Like I mentioned with Bjork, it's the connection to the spirit that generated the music. Sometimes, like with Prince it's getting off on the musicianship, the stage presence, how celebratory it all is. Sometimes I'm absolutely starstruck (Bowie). Sometimes I can go to a show and not even really remember how it all looked visually but have a very strong memory tied to how I felt and how it sounded (New Order). Sometimes it's just the mood I'm in. Like at the Musicology shows... I went to two. The first one I had a miserable time. I went with my mom, brother and Aaron and ran into my cousin and one of my best friends. My seats were great. But I just couldn't shake my bad mood. I couldn't stop thinking about my dad. And that happens to me at shows sometimes - it's such an intense experience usually that I tend to trip out, sometimes for the worst. At the 2nd show a month later, my seats weren't as good and some of the people I was supposed to go with couldn't make it, but I had an absolute ball. So even if all the factors that should go into making a great show are there, it isn't a guarantee that I'll love it. A lot of it is up to me.

Van Morrison.

I've seen him live about 10 times (3 times in concert, and probably about another 7 times at various festivals) and own quite a few of his albums. I've been a fan for years, and I can safely say that seeing him live is utterly pointless. However, this is more by way of a compliment than anything else. On stage he sings and plays everything note perfect, just as it sounds on record. He has no stage presence either - he just stands there like a big lump, and very rarely interacts with the audience. He has even famously played an entire concert with his back to the audience because he was in a bad mood and didn't want to look at them.

So when there's nothing happening on the stage, and the sound you're hearing actually makes you wonder if you're listening to a recording, there seems little point in being there.
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Kylie. She sings fine live, but what's the point in standing at the back of an arena, squinting your eyes, trying to manage to see anything of a woman who's barely the height of a traffic cone and on top that still trying to hide an erection at a public place? Can't be worth the ticket price.
