W A T T S T A X Wattastax! Did anyone hear see this program on TV last night. It was on a PBS channel and it was a concert from Summer of 72 or 73 in LA. It was awsome. I loved it. What did you think ?

Is this the concert with Richard Pryor in it? If so, I have it on DVD. The Bar-Kays were so fonky in that concert, although I've never been a fan or listener of their music. This whole concert ranks up there with Woodstock and The Mont. Pop Festival. The Emotions sung so beautifully in church. [Edited 8/9/05 11:25am] Check me out and add me on:

Didn't have to see it on t.v., cuz I was there! It was the first concert I had ever been to. I was little as hell! My mom and dad took me. Get the dvd. Good thread, annie. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I loved how well and peaceful the audience was behaving, even when they jumped the fence to do the Funky Chicken with Rufus. You must have been getting all teary like I did at the end, when they were chanting out" I am Somebody" I had forgotten that those chants are still with me and then when "Lift every voice and sing" began, I was just crying. Thanks

I've got the DVD. The show is great. I loved the performance of "Son Of Shaft". As always, The Bar-Kays turned it out. Andy is a four letter word.

Outside of the stellar performances, other highlights for me were...
~The Richard Pryor segments ~The unexpected cameos by Ted Lange (Isaac/Loveboat), DeForest Covan (Woodrow/Sanford & Son) and one of the kids from The White Shadow. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I miss alot when I'm off for a couple of days - this thread almost blew by me -- I have this DVD - I love those days I wish I was apart of that era - it seems I got the low end of the stick - I would've loved Jesse Jackson then he seemed so involved and in tune with what was really going on and now.... well you know about his political bullshit conformity We definitely need a festival revival!
Oh my favorite performance: The Staple Singers - now there's somthing that doesn't die good music and real talent! Mavis is still the shit! [Edited 8/10/05 11:50am]

I can't help but watch that movie over and over to reflect on our struggle. [Edited 8/10/05 12:28pm]

Sistergirl, I think you've touched on something. More or less, when our people started concentrating more on intergration and less on preservation, we lost touch with ourselves and the struggle. This is what's causing our demise.

Yeah and the key word is "a lot of BLACK people having fun." U see that now and compare that to how it is today, two entirely different planets. It's like watching the box set to Soul Train. Look at the clips from the 70's and NOW look at that shit that's on today. Wow. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
