The recent thread on 80's videos reminded me, has anybody else collecting 70's(and late 60's) videos/performances? I have a stash, and I've been trying to put some compilations together, but they've been kinda hard to find (Man, I wish VH-1 still showed stuff like 8 Track Flashback!, and Best of Midnight Special, etc.)

Your music collection and knowledge just astonishes me paligap ~ I really have learned a lot from your posts and all the time am reminded of something I've forgotten about. Just this morning was listening to "I'll Take You There". These are ALL live or video? Wow!!!!!

Somewhere i've got a couple of VHS tapes full.



The more I think about it, one of those tapes has a live performance of Prince doing America (with horns - Eddie M)

I know they were showing old Soul Train reruns in Japan a few years ago-- Why the Hell can't they do that here? or release 'em as DVD box sets? I think they'd make a killing.

They're selling 10 VHS videos of 'Soul Train' from the 70s.I have all ten volumes and they are INCREDIBLE!

Notably,in the 70s,many of these artists were NOT lip-syncing.They performed these songs live.

are you kidding? Since they started puting out music concerts/clips on DVD i have been jonesing for them to put out collections of rare 70s performances. I'm really a fan of 70's music from ALL genres really having grown up in that time when it was common for major radio companies to play soul, rock & pop all together back to back on the same station (ah, those were the days)... but i'm REALLY looking for the harder to find soul clips. A lot of the rock & pop stuff was definitely captured and archived and while some of it is hard to find, a good bunch of of it can be found on compilations and stuff...but the soul stuff wasn't officially documented quite as thoroughly so its not as easy to track down... and a lot of it is simply gone forever which is sad to think about.

At a record show I did come across this bad... i mean really badd quality VHS of a show called "SOUL!"...probably a regional program were soul artist coming through would perform a few songs live...this is the gem of my small but hopefully growing collection...

this tape has great... i mean GREAT live performances of The Chilites, early Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes featuring Teddy Pendergrass, The Spinners, The delfonics & the mighty mighty Dells. like i said the audio & visual quality aint the best, its pretty awful in fact, but the PERFORMANCES are so great and the historical element of it just makes this one of the most valued parts of my collection.

I hope to soon get one of those DVD burners so that i can transfer this gem to something more longlasting than VHS and then make copies to share with folks. I'll try tokeep you posted...

and if anyone outthere has any more footage or informaton about this "SOUL" show (where was it broadcast from, for how long, what years?)...or similar shows/clips like it please let me know. I want em!

By the way Paligap...i am very envious of your collection...NICE! Man i would love to see all of that stuff. I'm curious, how many of yours are actual live performances, (versus lip syncing / early musicvideo type clips?). Either way you have a nice collection of stuff there, it would be a blast to see & hear all of that again...
