They didn't really rip him off. Pete was a big fan of Divine, and producer Bobby O' (also produced PSB's earliest stuff). Pete wanted Bobby to produce the follow-up to Sophisticated Boom Boom, but he had some troubles contacting him, and heard some bad-luck stories of him not being financially upfront (not paying people). By this time, Divine had a new record out, You Think You're A Man, and Pete loved the sound, which was a copy of the Bobby O' Hi-NRG sound - the producers were Stock, Aitken & Waterman (later producers of Kylie, Rick Astley et all when they went mainstream), so he got on board with them, and they produced DOA's next two records.

Boy George was the big commercial success, DOA were the second fiddle in the media, kookier ones. George and Pete were always pitted against each other in the media, as rivals, just like Prince and MJ. When Pete was on the media trail, with Spin 2003, he did a radio show with George (it was his show), and it was a great interview, like two old 'rivals' having a good old chin-wag - like Crystal and Alexis!

Did you guys knows that, oddly enough Pete Burns and Morrissey used to be the best of friends? Well, some would say more than that.
But anyways, rumor has it that they had a big falling out because Pete Burns bought a fur coat, and that got Morrissey pretty heated. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Marylin is a bit of a tragic figure really.
He was a peer of Boy George's, and he got a deal purely based on his affiliation with George. He was last seen on a UK cable reality TV show, The Salon (set in a hair-dressers), he's a fat old toothless bitter has-been. He was threatening to re-release Call My Name, but nothing came of it. // Pete had some health problems last year that kinda halted his recording, but the single produced by the PSB's, Jack & Jill Party was great, a real dark, brooding, Hi-NRG stomper. Pete did some live shows around the time of it's release at London's electro club nights.

Well Youthquake is the album with Spin on. It's their 2nd LP, and the first, Sophisticated Boom Boom (named after The Shangri-Las track) was the first LP, a little darker and rawer, recommended definately. After Youthquake comes Mad, Bad & Dangerous To Know, again produced by SAW, a little poppier, but some great tracks, Something In My House, In Too Deep, Come Inside (sounds like a lost Bananarama single) and Brand New Lover are all highlights. Next is Rip It Up a "mix CD" slash best of of the SAW stuff, a mix CD in the tradition of THL's Love & Dancing and Soft Cell's Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing. After they left SAW, the followed it up in 1989 with 'Nude' (with a Lovesexy inspired cover), which is a SAW sound-alike, but a VERY strong effort, the lead single, Turn Around & Count 2 Ten, was apparently #1 in Japan for weeks and weeks. After this, they kind of dropped off the radar in the UK, they released 'Fan The Flame pt.1 in Japan, which is a favourite of mine, but loathed by many fans - it keeps the strong melodic element of their music, but the Hi-NRG beats are exchanged for fashionable, and somewhat dated, House-influenced sounds. After this, the 1995 fan-favourite Nukleopatra was released, I find it terribly dated, but it's a return to the hard-pounding sound of their 80s stuff. After this, there wasn't much until 2000's Japanese only release, Fragile, which is another favourite of mine, it's half re-worked and re-recorded oldies with half new songs, which are deceivingly strong efforts, Isn't It A Pity is an absolute classic, a very self-depricating and honest lyric. Lastly was the Fragile remix album, Unbreakable - AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Even Pete has distanced himself from this album. It was commissioned by the Japanese record label, and is a remix album of 'Eurobeat'/Para Para versions of tracks from Fragile. Now I like some Eurobeat/Para Para, but this is a really dire album, not worth bothering with. After that, they had the best of release, which was brilliant, considering they are only known for the 1 track - a 2CD and DVD release, some great pics of Pete - the cover of which is inspired by Pete's love of Divine's role as Dawn Davenport in Female Trouble Lastly, the PSB-written/produced single, Jack & Jill Party, available from PSB's website. SO..... I recommended Sophisticated Boom Boom Youthquake Nude Nukleopatra Now I would also say my favourites are Fan The Flame pt.1 and Fragile, but the above are what is considered essential DOA. They don't have too many albums, so I say get them all Hee-hee, BUT, the Best of released in 2003 was a brilliant retrospective, so plump for that first [Edited 8/3/05 17:37pm]

I never heard the full album until recently, I got it from one of the 1980s binaries newsgroups, and I thought it was very early Culture-Club sounding, pretty much what one would expect. I wasn't that struck with it, but I was glad to hear it nonetheless.

'Nukleopatra' is notable for Pete's faithful cover of Bowie's "Rebel Rebel".

A note on the DVD...it is PAL only, but if you have region free DVD you are good. I have heard that there are all kinds of goodies as extras like a concert is included. Definitely worth getting. They would really do themselves a little justice if they came out with a 12" compilation CD too. DOes anyone know what exactly the 12" of Hooked on Love is? Is it a 12" version of it? I have heard the single which is reworked, but is the 12" in the same vain as their others? Christian Zombie Vampires

They were slated to have a "comprehensive" 12" collection double cd due out in June (Japanese only release), but as usual, it's been pushed back. Also, the collection was missing "Misty Circles" (which is why I was bitching about it's ommission in an earlier post).
