Man, they don't hear you... disbelief
TRC woulda never happened if somebody hadn't given him that inspiration again.

Can you PROVE that Prince did TRC JUST BECAUSE D' CALLED HIM OUT ON VOODOO?

TRC was a complete answer record due to Voodoo. Voodoo lit a fire under Princes' ass. Which is weird because he was inspired (or fired...up) by someone aping HIM circa Parade/SOTT era.

I think it's absurd to think that a legend like Prince NEEDED inspiration from a NEWBIE like D'Angelo. Get real. Some of you guys are sucking WAY TOO HARD ON D's DICK right about now. Release his nuts and clear your brain. eek wink

I think its pathetic when people say you HAVE to be stoned in order to appreciate an album. Hey, Dark Side of the Moon is better stoned, but it is also a masterpiece when you're sober. Without any drugs, Voodoo is just plain boring

Hmmm, but I'm not going to spend my hard-earnt money on listening to Voodoo while stoned. Drugs cost money, you know.

Oh my bad I didn't know that you were one of "those" kinda Prince fans who thinks his ass doesn't stink sometimes. Seems like I ain't the one who needs to take the dick outta his mouth because you've got a pretty good grip on the purple nuts yourself. wink When the last time, other than the song "Adore", that Prince released music as organic as The Rainbow Children. TRC was dominated by the sound of fender rhodes and rimshots. We all know Prince was capable of doing it before D'Angelo came along. But I'm convinced that the neo-soul sound of D'Angelo (and Badu and Jill Scott for that matter) helped inspire the sound of TRC along with Voodoo's liner notes.

Prince was stuck in the plastic lame ass Kirky J production mode for 5 years. Honestly what do you think broke him of that?

My problem with D was doing a mediocre album, and then trying to act like HIS music is the kind of thing P should be doing. He made all these arrogant statements about how Voodoo was his audition to produce Prince, since P was making rather weak records.

Voodoo's liner notes were written by Saul Williams, not D'Angelo. (however hurtful they may have seemed, I think they were on point. Prince's next follow-up was the neo-soulful Rainbow Children.)

The only thing D'Angelo wrote were his thank yous.

I read SEVERAL interviews around the time of that released where D'Angelo defended and backed up Saul's statements.

As for TRC being an answer to VooDoo, I disagree. To me, TRC is much more influenced (musically) by Eryka Badu's Mama's Gun. Now "The Daisy Chain" was DEFINTELY a response to D's statements, as was the "Moneyappolis Remix" of "Undisputed".

I'm not saying TRC is a response in the literall since.. your saying that undisputed remix and daisy are responses.. yes, they are in the literal sence.

But musically, I believe TRC has elements of voodoo, or inspiration perhaps...and I believe that Mama's Gun was involved in his musical change also..

Hmm? So after ALL of that BASICALLY you're ADMITTING THAT YOU HAVE NO PROOF THAT D'ANGELO INSPIRED THE LEGEND THAT IS PRINCE TO DO TRC.

Nice abusing you, son. Now, swallow the rest of D's luv juice and lay your head by his waiste like a good bitch. lol wink

I honestly DON'T think it was Voodoo. I can agree that Badu and Scott had an influence, and even D'Angelo on Brown Sugar, but Voodoo was just as tepid, in my mind, as anything on NPS or Rave. I don't find the grooves on Voodoo to be organic, in the slightest. Its boring, stripped down drum sounds that are more akin to the horrid beats Kirky J was doing on NPS than ANYTHING on TRC.

Totally don't see any elements of Voodoo at all. To me, it has way more in common with NPS than TRC. That is a big reason I hated it. Tepid, boring funk (and I use that word loosely).

Yes, Brown Sugar got P's attention, not Voodoo. All the name dropping P did towards D was prior to Voodoo. Afterwards, P was making comments about showing D the "REAL chicken grease". Hardly complimentary.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the same deal. Boring, weak, repetitive drum beats over sparse, uninteresting arrangements. This describes both of these craptacular albums.
