It was a hoshposh of outtakes to me. Some shit he just threw together after he found another label after being gone for 5 years. A weak effort that ONLY generated heat due to his naked video.

clapping Well Said Brown Sugar was better written and arrranged.

I gotta agree with this too. Voodoo just did not live up to the hype for me. Whereas, I enjoyed most of Brown Sugar. I only really liked one song on Voodoo and it wasn't that bucknaked video rip off of Jill Jones' "Baby You're A Trip."

Back to the frakin' topic:

I tried to like Voodoo, I really did, but I just LOATHE that album.

I bought the album, having only heard a live performance of "Chicken Grease", so I really didn't know what to expect. I surely wasn't expecting the pseudo-funk sounds that he and ?uestlove were churning out on this disc.

Still, so many people were saying "oh, you just have to listen to it some more, there are so many layers to it". Well, I just don't see it. Boring, tepid funk-lite that isn't as good as the crap P put on NPS (and I think everyone knows how much I detest that album).

I think its pathetic when people say you HAVE to be stoned in order to appreciate an album. Hey, Dark Side of the Moon is better stoned, but it is also a masterpiece when you're sober. Without any drugs, Voodoo is just plain boring

Thank you Jedi.

Everytime someone brings up this album they always harp on the "deep down swamp funk" and "letting it marinate" and blah, blah, blah. Please... When I heard the album the first time all I could think about was 1) it's boring and 2) he's imitating about 3 different old school artists (Curtis Mayfield, Sly, Prince) without adding anything original to it, and 3) why the f*ck is his ass mumbling over damn near every song.

two different albums with two different things going on, Brown Sugar is a song album, Voo Doo is more about a vibe, it tried to capture a mood and put you in a certain state of mind, hints the title of the album. Seems like it worked for some, others it may not have, everybody doesn't catch the holy ghost in church either, he said in a yahoo interview that he grew up in a black church where people would shout, and that it reminded him of voo doo or something along those lines. Different strokes for different folks. and so on and so on...

Interesting. Of course, I don't really get any kind of "black church" gospel vibe from the album at all.

I think he was going for the mystery behind the idea of 'Voodoo', not to recreate the church atmosphere.

he claimed church inspired it, and how the shouting in church was like that of a voo doo ceremony

this is the source of the statement, if you can get this link to work

I'm glad somebody is paying homage to Prince, or stealing from him or whatever, better than all this other BS out these days, same with Andre 3000, he did the song Spread in the Camille voice, and they both openly acknowledge Prince as a influence. These artists keep the torch lit and they introduce these influences to a whole other generation of listeners. Prince sounds like Sly on all my dreams, he sounds like Sly on Make Yo Ma Ma Happy and like George Clinton and Sly on Erotic City, I got into sly and George Clinton because of Prince. I know a lot of people who started listening to Prince because of D’Angelo and OutKast. So if we are going to condemn people for sounding like their influences, then we should not be Prince fans. HouseQuake, Sexy MF and Musicology... James Brown, Reflection... Joni Mitchell.. On The Couch sounds a lot like Sly and The Family Stones cover of Que. Sera Sera So What? Who Cares? It’s still good. Just like Africa is still a good song.

Maggot Brain is very Hendrix esq ( damn good ) some folks influences show,

You're right about that... what trips me out is that some of the same folks who are so concerned with D'Angelo ripping off Prince will be in the Prince forum trying to "school" somebody on how unoriginal Prince was and how he stole ideas from Shadrack, Meshack and Abednego.

In addition, if I started a Richard Pryor tribute thread right now I betcha wouldn't see any disgruntled folks about the word "nigga"

My response to you was in regards to the song Send it On. The entire song was a replayed version of Kool & the Gang's "Sea of Tranquility" ...a falsetto voice and a few howls doesn't always make a carbon copy of Prince.
