Ottensen

I love this topic. Sitting here on a rainy Sunday night in my home studio with the G4, actually listening to a bootleg of D'Angelo play this album out solo on Piano, chillin' in some hotel bar after a show...brilliant s**t...I'm sorry but he's a bad mamma jama, period.

i wish D'Angelo would put out something new so that we could all move on to something else instead of rehashing this album every 3 months.

Does the LP sound like a Prince imitation to you? I know personally, I hear touches of Prince in 4 songs only: Left & Right, Chicken Grease, Untitled and Africa. But out of 13 songs I don't think that constitutes a "Prince copy"

I didnt think it honestly constituted an official copy.. I understand the inspiration.. but hell, what are you gonna do? I dont generally think of prince when I listen to D.. I hear the simularities that D felt were necessary for his music.. I mean damn, if you were inspired by Prince, and felt that this paticular style would benefit your vision.. why not..

I dont think he was trying to imitate Prince.. cause Prince never surfaced this type of album.. not saying thats a good or bad thing. I just think this album is very different from prince music.. although the sound is simular..

In HIS liner notes, he mentions being JUST THAT - THE NEXT PRINCE. So that settles that discussion, eh? wink

Well, what is it exactly that makes you feel that way? What specifically makes you feel like Voodoo was a "hosposh of outtakes"?

Maybe not so much as "outtakes" per se, but they felt very underproduced and thrown together - demo-ish.

I dont' know where y'all bought your copy of Voodoo, but mine sounds NOTHING like Prince. Maybe Untitled, but other than that, I dont' hear ANY Prince on there at all.

I guess you haven't heard Send It On then, eh? wink

I think Voodoo is a good solid album, very experimental and a huge departure from the more commercial/accesible Brown Sugar. However, I never really considered the album "great". I commend D for trying something so different and organic, but the album has terrible pacing. The slow to mid-tempo jams become too repetitive at points and there are too many ballads. That's the problem I tend to have with Neo-Soul in general, no one makes great uptempo tracks anymore and the albums have very little to no funk on them. I think D'Angelo's album is a "classic" in comparison to the shit that comes out today, but I don't think its as good as everyone else seems to think it is. I've seen it compared to the Hissing of Summer Lawns, Sly's There's A Riot Goin On etc. earlier in the threads and though I agree he took a chance like Sly and Joni, I think his attempt falls grossly short of theirs. However, thats not a fair comparison considering it was only his 2nd studio album and Sly and Joni were further along in their careers. I do commend D for taking such a huge risk on his second studio album though.

Also, the Prince influence is found on the record, as many have stated in earliers posts. Africa's drumming is lifted from I Wonder U's opening, Untitled sounds like damn near every 6-7 min Prince sex ballad, like Insatiable, while Left and Right and Chicken Grease have a heavy Prince influence that was ultimately channeled from James Brown, sans the DEEP funk the aforementioned artists were able to generate. But labeling the album a Prince clone is far too derivative...I don't think the sounds are diverse enough to compare to a Prince album. Just my opinion.

Dude seriously needs to put out something new though, because this one album every 5, 6, 7, or 8 years shit is getting old. And considering how much time he takes between albums you would hope he could come out with something mindblowing.

I'm with you. I can't listen to it. It feels like it's all over the place for no reason. Some call it experimental. I called it a mess. I like artists to experiment, but can I get a few songs in the mix. These don't feel like songs to me. But, everyone like what theylike. I just can't dig this and I've tried and tried.

I'm sorry. I would like to like the album a lot, but whenever I try to listen to it it just makes me wanna climb on the bed and go to sleep - which is exactly what I've done every single time I've attempted to listen to it. I have actually no idea what the album sounds like in full, from the start to the end.

That's my opinion dammit and I'm sticking to it. There are certain songs on that album that are dead ringers for P's music and D should be paying P royalties in fact.
