Voodoo - D'Angelo ... revisiting this

What songs did it for you? I'm not sure if its the overall feeling of the album.. or perhaps a specific song.. but he grabbed a lot of feeling and soul.I got this album when it first dropped.. and its still marinating.. very deep. I dig D, but I debate how prolific this man will be..

It was a hoshposh of outtakes to me. Some shit he just threw together after he found another label after being gone for 5 years. A weak effort that ONLY generated heat due to his naked video.

See I disagree.. Brown Sugar is a fantastic song.. but the surface of it.. is all you see.
with Voodoo.. its much more deeper in a dualistic way.. meaning and musically.
I'd rather hear music that has a lot more to say than something that will raid the airwaves. Voodoo is a personal and.. i'd say spiritual album in a much more natural term than the traditional.

Amen Hotlegs. This album literally put me to sleep the second time I listened to it and I still haven't listened to it since then in 2000.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

To each its own, you have a right to your opinion. However, I still feel that the Brown Sugar album was better written, arranged and executed all the way around.

It's an ok enough album, but it drags on in the end. Just like Badu's
second real album "Mama's Gun".

They start off and you think "damn, sounds good" and before you know
it, it's six hours later and you wake up drooling over your pillow..

Altho, having said that, "Voodoo" is more entertaining than Erykah's
second album.

I like the way the first few tracks segue a la Prince-Parade
The singles are all nice/good songs and beyond those I like:
Chicken Grease & Africa most. Especially "Africa" is such an
understated beautiful song. The percussion on some of these
tracks is fabulous too.

You guys should really re-visit it. I thought it was boring at first listen in 2000, but it is actually awesome!

I think the album lacks a theme but there is some very good stuff there. To me, it got better with time.

Didn't we fight over Paul Macrapney? Anyway, nevermind him. I love Voodoo - superior to Brown Sugar in almost every way. Not a dull second on the whole thing. Shame D' is sooooo damn lazy.

Voodoo is one of those albums that takes me to a moody place and D'Angelo creates an atmosphere of pure passion, soul, and love. This is D'Angelo's best album, even though there are on 4 weak one on here and most of the songs get long and repetitive. The Brown Sugar record is a good one too, but I personally love Voodoo better for the rhythms and the diversity D'angelo showcases here. One of my fave neo-soul albums along with Badu's Mama's Gun.

None of the song really grabbed me on this cd (Devils pie from the Belly soundtrack if that was on there then okay that song) but- it's a real bedtime vibe I like Brown Suga alot better and I also think it shows in the public response and record sales that Brown Suga was a better effort!

Funny, I gave this a spin today.

There's a lot on this thread I don't agree with, and lot I do agree with, but no time to get into it now.

D' fell in love with the half-speak/murmur-stlye signing voice and it annoyed the fuck out of me. I liked Devil's Pie and Untitled, but after that it was just weak.

i didn't think voodoo was a bad album, I loved "greatdayindamornin'" and "chicken grease" but I do agree with most on this post that it didn't beat the Brown Sugar album...he couldn't top "me and those dreamin' eyes" shit that song is nothing but the truth, i listen to it now and it still sounds just as good as it did when it came out. I love that song!!! biggrin
