GangstaFam said: The height of my Janet fandom was from '89 to '93. I haven't been as hardcore with her since. I still think fondly of her old work. I just very rarely play her music or think about her anymore. I want to like her. She just needs to give me a good reason to. Thats exactly the way I feel about Janet. I actually really liked Velvet Rope too, but since then ive liked a couple of singles but nothing that makes me want to listen to her and buy her stuff again. For me Control, RN1814 and Janet are my favourite works of hers. I am more inclined to go for Madonna over Janet, however i dont consider myself one of these madonna fans blinded by every little peice of shit she's done, and I know im a big enough, and diverse enough, lover of all music to have an informed and measured opinion about both artists work(s). Oh and my answer to the thread is, predictably, ray Of Light. A masterpeice. Sadly marked the end of madonnas use of a decent drummer and bass guitarist on her records. Drum machines, and programming replaced everything from now on. That said, i remember the first time they played Got Till Its Gone on the mTV awards, and i fucking flipped. Having played "janet" for years, i was eagerely anticipating her return, and i thought both the video and song were absolutely brilliant - one of the best uses / samples of another song done in years. Ray of Light is the first Madonna cd that I ever bought, but The Velvet Rope is a better.
I just feel that Madonna copies "trends" too much. Plus the bottom line is that I'm more of fan of Janet's music coz it's more R&B influenced than Madonna's that seems to be more pop.

the velvet rope.
this record just does things to my mind. ray of light is great, no doubt, and it may be madge's best record (though i think like a prayer takes that spot) but janet's velvet rope is just fantastic. maybe i just can't relate to ray of light. the velvet rope, however, has a lot of material that i understand from my own personal experiences which gives it a stronger connection. besides, musically speaking, the velvet rope is amazing. it still doesn't sound dated to my ears which is something i can't really say for ray of light, music, and american life.

Exactly You're probably correct. Many Jan fans believe that The Velvet Rope is probably Janet's best cd. Many people believe that Ray of Light is Madonna's best. So a Janet fan, is gonna rank Janet's best over Madonna's best and vice versa. So I guess it's a draw. Except there was a "neutral" MEMBER post that liked The Velvet Rope better, SO JANET WINS!!!! Exactly what about those of use who are fans of both women? i enjoy janet's music more than madge's but on the other two threads (erotica, like a prayer vs janet., 1814) i chose madonna.

This started off with Madonna kicking ass, but Janet made a comeback in the 2nd half. The score's at 11 to 10 with Ray of Light barely in the lead.

ROL easily.
loved loved loved TVR when it came out. but as time goes on, it's simply remembered (at least to me) as the 1997 update of a more depressing "janet." album. still, it's great. and miles ahead of the other 2 "janet."-retreads she's put out since. ROL on the other hand.... well, it revolutionized the top 40 style of pop / dance-pop. "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

well got-dayum! mark your calendar folks, this is a rare occassion! Don't do that bullshit with me. A while back in P&R I remember saying "I agree with you (and that's a first)", and you went on and on about how you hate the phrase, because people use it beyond the first time and then it gets redundant and blah blah blah. No semantics tonight! I agree with you often in Music: Non-Prince, never in P&R.

George Michael's last album sounds exactly like Older, production-wise. I'm not seeing the Madonna electronica influence in Kylie's albums, either (other than Impossible Princess, which bombed and she quickly moved away from that style). And on and on and on.... So, let's agree to disagree. [Edited 8/1/05 19:38pm]
