Rick Springfield offended by Oprah's offer I heard this story years ago but I never really got the full story and never realized that Rick was quite offended and pissed off by it. It was a few years back and Oprah was putting a show together of "one Hit" wonders, im not really sure when the show aired and who was on it, but anyway, Oprah and her producers contacted RICK to do the show, Rick being a nice guy declined "nicely" stating that he had alot more than ONE HIT. But now years later an interviewer brought it up while talking to Rick about his new Record, Rick as usual being a nice guy, just said he wished that Oprah and her staff would have done more research because the offer really offended him. So in case U think Like OPPRAH, here is a List of Rick's chart positions (POP unless Noted).
SONG YEAR PEAK Speak to the sky 1972 14 American Girls 1974 98 Take a Hand 1976 41 Jessies Girl 1981 1 I've Done everything for you 1981 8 Love is alright tonite 1981 20 Don't Talk to strangers 1982 2 Calling All Girls 1982 4 ROCK I get Excited 1982 32 What Kind of Fool Am I 1982 21 Souls 1983 23 Affair of the Heart 1983 9 Human Touch 1983 18 Love Somebody 1984 5 Don't Walk Away 1984 26 Bop Til u Drop 1984 20 Taxi Dancing (b side) 1984 44 Bruce 1984 28 (originally recorded 1978) Celebrate Youth 1985 26 State of the Heart 1985 22 Rock of Life 1988 22 Beautiful you 2004 24 AC Will I 2004 14 AC If U look at Rick's "chart" success during 81-85 he was right up there with others "icons" of that day like, BRUCE, MICHAEL, MADONNA, PRINCE, LIONEL etc. Also during 81-85 he released 5 albums all going Million Sellers, that COULD NEVER HAPPEN today with anyone. To date Rick has sold 19 million Records in the USA, I think this was HUGE error on OPRAH's part and her "ill Advised" staff. But in the End she Called Rick and asked him, so it was her "bad" call. The funny thing is That when "working class dog" came out everyone thought it was Ricks first album and it was his 6th. Also he was called a "TEEN IDOL" at that time and he was 33 years old. Well RICK has always had that bad luck, before the "DOG" album came out he was doing shows like Battlestar Gallactica and Wonder Woman, basically to pay the bills. He got the SOAP OPERA gig just as "DOG" came out, he was lucky because in that time period "General Hospital" was the HOT show too watch, so that did push the Record, but he was gone from that Soap long before the Next Record, he stayed on the show about a year. His continued bad luck came in 1988 when "rock of Life" came out and it was going well, just as he was to start his tour he had an ATV accident that almost Paralyzed him, it didnt, however, it ended his music career until he felt confident again to go on stage, in 1996 he started touring, in 1997 he recorded a record under another name called "SAHARA SNOW" then in 1998 he recorded his MOST PERSONAL record called "KARMA" and then toured playing about a 100 shows a year. In 2001 he released a LIVE record, and a special DVD just to his fans. Then in 2004 he recorded "SHOCKDENIALANGERACCEPTANCE" the hardest ROCK album Ever, especially from a guy in his mid 50's. Now in 2005 RICK has released his "COVERS" record called "theDayaFterYesterday" this Record once again shows Ricks Growth as a person and Player, and Actually Charted on the TOP 200, giving RICK a chart Span of 33 Years! It should also be noted that RICK was involved in a PAYOLA scandal back in 1972, well at least his LABEL was. Basically what happend was "Speak to the Sky" was released and shot up the charts and the Top 20 and So did his Album "BEGINNINGS" but then people started to question "how could this kid, an unknown, just do this out of nowhere" well the questions faded away, but the Reputation was there that RICK was maybe not on the Up and Up. So the Label dropped him and the Album dropped QUICK. For years the Scandal stuck to him, mainly because of "his Looks" no one thought this Cute Kid could play. Its so funny how this stuff was an issue back then and Not today. Take a look at someone like this "RIHANNA" who the hell is she and where did she come from, or Natasha Bedingfield, same thing, nowadays this is the way it goes.
