Your ideas for BET..

Everyone has their views on BET and what it isnt and should be. Personally, I think BET is trash now. I can remember being 8-9 years old and coming home from school seeing De La Soul's "Me Myself And I' or Kid and Play's latest video. I can remember watching the MONDAY MUSIC MARATHON and seeing CHEESY(laughs) videos by Prince and Cameo, among others BUT that Monday Music Marathon TAUGHT ME so much about classic music. Even the show Video LP. I cant remember the hosts name b4 Sherry Carter took over, but I loved watching those interviews and all the knowledge it imparted(I also loved its theme song which turned out a few yrs later to be Prince's PHEROMONE). BET taught stuff then. I can remember seeing Rachelle Farrell and Will Downing on there for the first time in the early 90's. I remember Video LP discussing Bobby Brown's fatigue during his DONT BE CRUEL tour in the late 80's. I can remember them discussing why Vesta Williams dropped the "Williams" part of her name and just went by VESTA. I can remember the PREMEIRE of Rap City on BET. I can remember seeing the premeire of Tracy Chapman's "Crossroads" video. I can remember watching Living Color and Peter Gabriel videos on BET...those 2 artists wouldnt be caught dead on BET these days.. BET dont educate anymore.
Since so many are unhappy with BET and so many REMEMBER its hey day, what would you like BET to do now to redeem itself...

Suggestions for BET:

1) Cater to a different demographic with their programming. Due to the racy content of rap videos, do not let them air anytime before 9pm (9pm-4am). By doing this, it would hopefully cause the videos to be filtered away from younger, impressionable eyes. Don't worry about record sales because the record companies can make their money via radio airplay.

2) Have news, political commentary, (& maybe infotainment) from 5am-12pm, 5pm-7pm. Issues affecting our community outside of what Lil Kim is wearing and what P-Diddy is doing. There are movers and shakers in the black business community that could benefit greatly from the exposure and the political commentary would be a wonderful side piece to meaningful political commentary from both the Left & the Right. This in turn would hopefully generate positive dialogue towards finding meaningful solutions to the problems that afflict the black community.

3) from 1pm-5pm and from 7pm-9pm, do OLD School jams/music. Even have an artist showcase to promote new artists from a variety of genres, not just hip hop. The old school jams should not be a stage for just MJ, Janet, or Prince vids, but items from Motown, Hendrix, the blues/jazz. I'm sure VIAcom can pony up the money to do this!

It is time to eradicate the negativity in the content and highlight what is right in many segments of the community. The Black community is not a hip-hop monolith in the 18-34 demographic.

Just a thought! biggrin

show programs where the black community is being helped or showing people what to do in order to help.

i wouldn't rule out the music shows were rappers and others from the entertainment industry are interviewed, but they should cut down on the derogatory videos. Maybe then when people realize that they won't be showed, they will stop making that trash.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

BET needs a really big make-over. I like everyone’s ideas on new original programming. We need our own version of Behind the Music (Which BET had a couple of years ago; Journey in Black anyone) and a couple of more programming. Also run reruns of classic black sitcoms daily. Here is a schedule that could help out the channel.

Week Day Afternoons / Evenings: everything is Monday through Friday unless stated.

5:00 - BET on JAZZ

6:00 - Hey Monie!

6:30 - The Jackson 5ive Show (The Cartoon Series)

7:00 - Work-Out Show

7:30 - Cooking Show

8:00 - Different World

8:30 - Webster

9:00 - The Center

10:00 - The Jeffersons

10:30 - What’s Happening!

11:00 - Videos (A Mix of videos from everyone old and new from 80’s Funk to 2000’s hip-hop, mix it all together. Play a Cameo video followed by Common followed by Van Hunt followed by Lenny Kravitz followed by Jodey Waltley.)

1:00 - Black daytime talk show.

2:00 - Video Soul (Showing today's top R&B and Soul videos)

3:00 - Rap City (Showing today's top Rap and Hip-Hop videos)

4:00 - Family Matters

4:30 - Bring back a Teen Summit type show. Something that addresses the issues of the day from a young black perspective.

5:00 - The New 106 & Park

6:30 - BET Style

7:00 to 8:30 - Keep this two hour block open for original programming besides Monday and Friday for The BET Blackbuster Movie.

Tues

7:00 - Madd Sports

8:30 - Reality Show (Surreal Life type with former black stars including Foster Sylvers, Antonio Fargus, Jimmy Walker, LaToya Jackson, Kim Fields, Jamie Foxworth, Holly Robinson Pete and Suge Knight)

8:00 - Coming To The Stage

8:30 - BET Artist Spotlight (One artist is spotlighted by Videos and archive footage from past BET shows)

Wed

7:00 - Access Granted

7:30 - Sketch Comedy/Improv Show

8:00 - Comic-View

Thurs

7:00 - Journeys in Black

8:00 - Live hosted by Donnie Simpson (Every week have one artist/group old or new perform and have interviews with him/her)

9:00 - Martin

9:30 - Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper

10:00 - A Black Talk Show (If D.L. Hughley can get one on CC, bring in another top black comic. Cedric the Entertainer, Eddie Griffin or someone like that.)

11:00 - BET News.

11:30 - In Living Color

12:00 - Classic Comic-View (Not the stuff they are showing now a days from 2-3 years ago; Put D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, Ricky Smiley when they were in their prime)

Leave BET just like it is for the thugged out Romper Roomers and just let them have it. BET should start a new channel (for basic cable so that I could have it lol). This channel should include:

Old school videos from back in the day. Not just the most popular videos such as the ones by Michael Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie, etc. but the ones that haven't been played since the 1980s. They also don't need to stay stuck in the late 1980s, they need to play those from the early 1980s that were actually called music videos also the ones from the late 1970s and early early 1980s that were called promo clips. No videos should be played on this channel past 1989.

Also, they should go back and get their hands on television appearances of black acts such as "Saturday Night Live", "Dinah Shore", "The Tonight Show", "Midnight Special", "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", "Solid Gold", "Dance Fever", or any other television show that may have had a musical performance by an R&B artist before the age of music videos. Don't show the entire show, just show the musical performances.

They should meet with Don Cornelious, or whoever they need to meet with and start airing the old episodes of "Soul Train" from the 1970s and 1980s. Don't edit the episodes down the 30 minutes like VH1 did with "American Bandstand", show the episodes in their entirety.

Show old sitcoms such as "Good Times", "What's Happening", "That's My Mama", "The Jeffersons", "Sanford And Son", etc.

Show the old blaxploitation movies from the 1970s and the black music movies of the early 1980s.

Show concerts from black artists from the 1970s and 1980s. They could even show recent concerts of the these old artists.

They should come up with shows that really give new and different artists a chance for exposure. We are so used to hearing and seeing only particular artists that its easy to become "brain-washed" so to speak but if BET would keep playing new things it would give people a chance to appreciate the different things out there. I also think they should go back to having live performances like they used to when Rachel was hosting "Planet Groove", if I'm naming it right. She would sit down with the artists and have interviews and then they would perform. I remember seeing Maxwell, Kelly Price, Zhane, and Erykah Badu perform and I felt that that was a good show.

So you think ALL of the shows I mentioned are boring? - What do you prefer as an alternative to BET or are you okay with what they're offering?
