Damita Jo vs. American Life

y'all knew it was coming!
the two divas' biggest commercial bombs (sadly both within recent memory)

Madonna "American Life" (2003)

Janet "Damita Jo" (2004)

which one?

this time the choice is obvious for me...

DAMITA JO!
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Damita Jo

...both albums weren't among the artist's better works. They both represented creative slumps... Damita Jo had the stronger songs than American Life did, however.

I really like Janet but "Damita Jo" can't compare with her previous works like "The Velvet Rope" "Janet" or "Rhythm Nation 1814"!!! smile

i must be psycho coz i actually think damita jo has stronger tracks on it than all 4 u, and much better pop tracks than the velvet rope, although i think tvr is better in the long run, DJ aint too bad. Its a much more listenable album than American Life.

I love, spending time with u, island life, rnb junkie, i want u, like you dont love me, all night dont stop, just a little while, slo love. and the other tracks like my baby, the title track and strawberry bounce aint too bad either.

Oh I agree on the whole. All For You was rubbish IMO, and The Velvet Rope was half great. The samples used on TVR were generally over-used and easily identifiable. Quite uninspired I thought, whereas Damita Jo was far better.

American Life, although the title track is far worse than anything on Damita Jo.

Damita Jo by far. At least Damita Jo had some good songs on it, American Life was trash from beginning to end.

The disjointed staccato instrumental of American Life annoys the hell out of me. At least the instrumentals of Warmth and Moist aren't assaults on my ears. Add lyrics that are just as inane (yet somehow even more trivial) as those from the Janet tracks, and American Life comes out the worst song on either album IMHO. I think it's one of the worst things she's ever cut, along with Jimmy Jimmy and One More Chance. How it became the first single is beyond me, since there are some really nice tracks on the album.

"Damita Jo", because at least the production is tight even if the content is downright pathetic. "American Life" combines pathetic content AND half-baked, well-worn folk-tronica bullcrap for production, so it's a worse offender.

Amen on all accounts. "American Life" is easily my least favorite song she's ever released, and that is saying something considering the other dire tracks you mentioned plus "Shoo Bee Doo", "Stay", "Love Makes the World Go Around" and "American Pie".

"Damn it Jo" should've been released as an EP or single

including:

"R&B Junkie"
"Put Your Hands On"
"All Night (Don't Stop)"

the only good songs off the album. confused

You people mess with my head. I used to love janet, right up to The Velvet rope. jam & lewis were on the ball, and her sound was fresh, however since then she's been nothing short of an embarassment. This woman has NOTHING to talk about. Sexhibition. Moist. Warmth. Slolove!!!!! She's been regurgitating the same old shit since Janet, except unlike Janet & TVR she (jam & Lewis) ran out of ideas.....long ago (or started spreading themselves too thinly).

Now American Life aint my favourite madonna album, but i respect what she was trying to do there. Sure Mirwais' production is a little sparse, repetitive, even cheap sounding, but at least it's different. American life is a shitty madonna single, as is Die Another Day, but dont dare tell me that Mother & Father, nothing Fails & hollywood dont shit all over that pathetic excuse for an album that is Damita Jo. FORMULAIC CRAP.

"the magic hour.....that's like the ultimate for me, when its almost dark, and there's still that little bit of light left, the breeze is still there and its still hot out....that is just complete heaven for me.....".....Big fuckin whoop....what an insightful interlude Janet.....erm when are you going to make a good song again? Yet another example of another Jackson loosing themselves up their own arse.

I see so many people slag madonna off on this message board, for justified reasons many times, but this is off the scale. I couldnt even think of a single song that came off Damita Jo, maybe because no one in England gives a shit about her anymore, or maybe because the two times i tried listening to the album, absolutely nothing struck me as inventive, clever, different or just plain funky. I concede American Life aint a fantastic album, but please I can think of 11 songs on there Id rather listen to than any one off Damita Jo.

Err, my answer is American Life by the way.
