Man, PLEASE don't get me started about one of my all time favorite bassists that has ever lived. Mr. Bernard Edwards, bless his soul, was one of the greats, and this bass line alone, influenced countless of bassists. John Taylor of Duran Duran said he started to play bass strictly cuz of this bass line. John Deacon of Queen was so fucked up by this bass line, that he lifted it wholesale for Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust". Check out the bass line for "Promises, Promises" by Naked Eyes. Oh yeah, and the bass line to "Rapture" by Blondie. Oh, and "Rapper's Delight" by Sugarhill Gang, released the same fucking year!

Shit Miles, who ya playing with? That song used to be the skating jam. It's something about that thumping bass that gets your heart pumping and gets the rink rocking. Wow, those were the days.

Anyone remember the scene at the end of "Wild Style" where the DJ kept scratching "Good Times"?

That was hot.

Bernard Edwards' playing harkens back to James Jamerson in that there's no thumping/slapping/snapping just straight finger-style bass playing.
A perfect example of how a simple bassline, played well, can really drive a tune.
He puts his dooky on the chorus section with a funky figure at the end to turn the line around.

The keyboards/guitar/strings/vocal melody, this whole tune is a lesson in simplicity.

And the rhythm section of Bernard Edwards/Tony Thompson/Nile Rodgers created a signature sound for the late 70s.

Great song, great bassline. John Deacon's bass on Queen's Another One Bites the Dust is very similar and equally as good.

I mentioned in my post (up above) about how John Deacon bit off sooooo much from that bass line. Really, Queen could have been sued for plagerism, it was that blatant of a rip. Even though I dug "Another One Bites" (an ironic title if u think about it), I always thought that John's playing on that song was somewhat ...stiff. Especially compared to Bernard. The fluidty wasn't there. And u need that if you're going to play a Bernard filtered through Jamerson type style bass line. Brian May's playing on that cut was in the pocket though!

Agreed, but as tight as it is, the bassline for "Everybody Dance" is amazing.

Nah, brother. No need for that. I was just using that to springboard into my point about how I wasn't that crazy about how John played on the cut. U always cool with me, Rip.

You're right on point w/ that, B. John Deacon admitted he stole that bassline from Chic....but we all know Queen could get funky when they had to. wink
