I remember a Rick James concert came to my area in the summer of 1981. The concert consisted of Cameo, Teena Marie, and Rick James. Music videos were not widely popular at that time, especially with R&B acts, so the television commercial for the concert consisted of a clip of the "Give It To Me Baby" music video ("Super Freak" had not exploded yet), a "Soul Train" clip of Cameo, and an album shot of Teena Marie's "It Must Be Magic". I've got his two new DVDs ordered so hopefully it will be on there and I will get to see it again. Andy is a four letter word.

I love the Gap Band,I really do.But I think Cameo simply had more impressive songs. The Gap Band lost their way after the 'Gap Band' IV album in 1982.Songs like the formulaic "Party Train" and "Desire" proved that were running out ideas.Cameo,on the other hand, continued going strong at least until the end of the 80s.

Ohhh man this is tough. I got a headache trying to figure this one out.
I have seen both in concert ( I actually got to meet the Gap Band...I went to school with their niece and when they came to Oakland in 1983 she got us backstage ), I have all of their albums from the 70's and 80's, have been a big fan of both since the 70's.....i have to give a slight edge to Cameo....just barely. But Calhoun, as great as that song is, you have to agree Cameo crushed the Gap Band from 82-86. Gap fell off after IV right when Cameo was heating up. I know you know your old school history girl. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

That's nice & all but if I were to go on a trip & I could take either my Cameo catalogue or Yearning For Your Love/Outstanding by the Gap Band, I'd take the Gap Band But I guess that's just me

at all of you responding to this unanswerable question..almost unanswerable.
BUT I DONT THINK, Gap can funk it up live like Cameo. Though I have heard "Alligator Woman" (nothing impressive but funky), my favorite album is "Secret Omen" and "We All Know Who We Are". I also own "Single Life" "Alligator Woman" and "Knights Of The Sound Table" On the Gap side though I have about the same amount of albums, III, VI, VII, VII and 8. Hard to choose on album wise I saw the above posts and I just cant decide! Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.
