Cameo Vs. Gap Band

With such classics as:

Candy
Word Up

and
Why Have I Lost You?

Vs.

with such classics as:

Outstanding
Burn Rubber On Me

and
U Dropped A Bomb On Me

both bands starting off as funkoff with high inspirations from Parliamentfunkadelicment, then trying the crossover 80's with drum machines, still electrifyin funk.

I heard Larry Blackmon made comments about Gap Band at the Minneapolis concert saying: "This aint the Gap Band come on.." several times. So this thread is worthy.

I HAVE to vote for Cameo since I havent seen Gap live...though I think the Gap Bands albums are kinda better by a notch confuse

U go little paisley with that fine thread hyere if u came up with it. I like both bands a lot really i do, but i would have to give it to Gapp Band.

Early in the morning, party train, burn rubber, all my love, my heart yearning are just too much for cameo to tackle with candy, word up, sparkle, ahhh dam i don't know now. i say Gapp Band just to be different.

Cameo - Any group derived from the classic group Slave gets MAD PROPERS from me.

It's all about Cameo. My fave is SHAKE YOUR PANTS.

All Gapp Band songs sounded the same to me. Same music, different lyrics. I'm only sayin'.

Cameo hands down!

Better singles and much deeper catalog.

Let's look at both groups during their prime years (1979-86)

1979
Gap II vs Secret Omen

Strongest cuts: (Gap) Steppin Out & Oops (Cameo) I Just Want To Be & Sparkle

While both these albums has some nice cuts, neither is really a favorite of mine.

Winner: Tie

1980
Gap III vs Cameosis

Strongest cuts (Gap) Burn Rubber & Yearning (Cameo) Shake Your Pants & Cameosis

Battle of heavyweight albums here. These might be each groups strongest album. So much to love about both. The slow jams are on point and the funk is non-stop.

Winner: Tie

1980-1981
Gap IV vs Feel Me(80) & Knights Of The Sound Table

Strongest Cuts (Gap) Outstanding & Early In The Morning (Cameo) Keep It Hot & Don't Be So Cool

This is where the tide really turns for Cameo. Gap IV is a great album no doubt. If Gap III isn't their best Gap IV surely is. But Cameo hits with two solid albums around this same time. If you view Feel Me and KOTST as a double album, this is a no brainier

Winner: Cameo

1982
Gap V vs Alligator Woman

Strongest Cuts (Gap) Shake a Leg & Party Train (Cameo) Be Yourself & Flirt

Cameo comes with a great album here while Gap's effort is simply
good.

Winner: Cameo

1983-85
Gap VI vs Style, She's Strange & Single Life

Strongest Cuts (Gap) Beep a Freak & I Found My Baby (Cameo) She's Strange & Single Life.

Again, Cameo holds an advantage with the sheer number of tracks released. But even if you just pull their strongest album (which I feel is Single life) from this period, they still win on quality of the tracks.

Winner: Cameo

1986
Gap VII vs Word Up

Strongest Cuts (Gap) Bumpin' Gum People & Going In Circles (Cameo) Word Up & Candy

Knock Out!

Winner: Cameo

Now I love me some Gap Band, but I don't see how anyone can make the argument they are even in Cameo's league. Cameo has one of the richest and deepest catalogs in old school history.

The muthafuckin' Gap Band! nod Nothing Cameo ever has done can approach the synth syrup of "You Dropped a Bomb on Me", "Early in the Morning" or "Burn Rubber". This one isn't even close.

And those are all from Gap IV which makes my point. When you go album by album, Gap band doesn't stand up.

And for "synth syru" I guess you've never heard Candy huh

Wow this is actually a hard battle, paisley. Uhh, I can't choose. Sorry. I love Cameo and the Gap Band.

Uncle Charlie does have more staying power lately.

But Cameo did have that appeal.

Man, this is too hard.

Hell yeah. My favorite Cameo era was when the band consisted of about 10 or 12 members.....especially when it included the guy with the high falsetto.
