SLAVE APPRECIATION THREAD How come when people speak of funk they NEVER mention SLAVE? They mention G. Clinton, Parliament/Funkadelic, Rick James but people SLEEP on SLAVE. I saw them in concert back in the day and they had AT LEAST 50 musicians playing. SLAVE gave us Steve Arrington - The man Keith Sweat stole his sound from - Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame, Deja, Aurra, also helped jumpstart Cameo, Tavares and other funk bands to come.

Nah, there are plenty of people here who mention Slave (Paligap will show up soon!). Other groups I admire, like Brand New Heavies, owe a lot of their sound to Slave. I have Slave and Stone Jam, both great albums. I like the first album a lot, but I love the smoothness of Stone Jam. Yeah, it's more commercial sounding, but it's not a bad thing. They didn't lose any of their funk appeal when they added Arrington to the microphone. Some of my favorite tracks:
Slide Screw Your Wig on Tite You and Me Starting All Over Just a Touch of Love Feel My Love Watching You Sizzlin' Hot Snap Shot Steal Your Heart And I do wish Rhino would re-issue some of Slave's catologue. Of the nine albums they recorded for Cotillion between 77 and 84, only two are available on CD. | |

Ndeed,  !! This is bizarre, I was just sittin' here listening to Aurra when I read this post!! Slave was my favorite funk band after P-Funk, and Bass player Mark Adams was one of my main influences! and I love Aurra/Deja And Steve Arringtion! I love the fact that slave did their best to keep it raw and funky at a time when most other funk bands were starting to sound slick and commercial...

Slave is underrated. "Slave/Slide" was my 1st exposure to the. Drac belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame for his lead solo in "Slide". He's right up there with Ernie Isley and Eddie Hazel. Slave has definetly put out some killer jams. | |

Just A Touch Of Love (1979) is similar in feel to the Stone Jam (1980) album, whereas 1978's "The Concept" is much rawer, with Mark "Drac" Hicks going into full Hendrix Mode , especially at the end of "Just Freak"...
1981's "Showtime" was pretty dangerous, too, although Drac was gone by then, and Curt Jones and Starlena Young had left to form Aurra..
if you just want an overview, then Rhino's two volumes are fine: Stellar Fungk: The Best Of Slave, and Party Lights: More Of The Best of Slave  
for Steve Arrington, this album is essential: 
Aurra's albums were put on CD last year , but only in Europe and Canada. they're all similar in feel to the later Slave albums, I think A Little Love was probably the best...
this compilation is available in the US:

I think the tracks "Never Get Away" and "Sizzling Hot" from Stone Jam is are good examples of Slave at their peak --- The interplay between guitarists Marck Hicks and Danny Webster with Monster Bassist Mark Adams, and the dual lead vocals of Curt Jones and Steve Arrington...Slammin!
BTW, The Title track, Stone Jam is a real monster, but what's surprising is that it's not guitarist Drac on that solo...that's actually a keyboard solo!! (Slave keyboardist Ray Turner leanin' on that pitch wheel!) Most off us thought it was Drac all this time... ... Awww Yeah, Slave laid down some killer funk, no holds barred. I loved all thier albums but their 2nd LP The Hardness Of The World was 1 of my personal favorites. Mark adams is also up there with as being 1 of the greatest funk bassists. | |
