We'll fight this together

CHILDREN with cancer were given a boost yesterday when fellow battler Kylie Minogue paid them a surprise visit.
Kylie, 37, looked relaxed and happy as she made her first public appearance since her breast cancer op.

She hugged, kissed and chatted to the youngsters at the Royal Children’s Hospital in her Aussie hometown of Melbourne.

The singer also handed out CDs and signed goodies to her excited new pals.

Hospital spokeswoman Kate Dunston said: “She spent a lot of time with the children individually and really connected with them. She had her dad with her and a couple of assistants. They all seemed to be very concerned for her.”
Kylie has been recuperating with her family after surgery to remove a lump from her breast in May. Aides revealed she brought forward the planned hospital visit after watching the pictures of the bombings in London, her adopted home city.
One said: “Kylie saw what was going on on the TV and decided she wanted to get up and do something positive.

“She decided the time was right yesterday and rang the charities she is involved with. The children weren’t told she was coming. Their faces lit up.”

Dave Rogers, of kids’ cancer charity Challenge, added: “This did Kylie as much good as it did the kids. I think she needed to see other people battling cancer. She seemed to take strength from the fact these kids are fighting it like she is.”

Kylie’s doctors are yet to give her the all-clear to get back to work. But she hopes to complete her postponed Showgirl tour later in the year.

Kylie to make full recovery

Kylie Minogue is expected to make a full recovery from breast cancer, according to her sister Dannii.

Kylie's little sister has revealed that the Aussie pop star is responding very well to treatment, calling her "inspirational".

Speaking at Tuesday's Diamonds Exhibition at the Natural History Museum in London, Dannii explained Kylie had come out fighting since being diagnosed with Cancer in May this year.

Dannii revealed: "I heard today she's going to be fine. She's really lucky her cancer has been treatable. She's going to get well and is getting better by the day."

"I can't wait for her to be back fully on her feet again. She's been inspirational - she's a fighter," said Dannii.

Kylie faces world to visit fellow sufferers

Friday 8th July '05

Kylie made her first public appearance today since being diagnosed with breast cancer in May, and won the hearts of even more people by making it an informal visit to a children's cancer ward at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital. Looking radiant and the picture of health, despite still being in recovery from her own cancer treatment, her visit also revealed the cat and mouse game she has been playing with the media which has left everyone guessing where she has been staying; it now transpires she has been in Australia all along!

Kylie Minogue, still recovering from surgery for cancer, has visited children facing a similar predicament. The pop princess met and chatted with patients at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital today.

Onlookers say the singer won over many shy fans.

"There's a champ, there's a champ coming by," one adoring fan said.

Organisers of the visit say Minogue was pleased to fulfil a commitment she had had to postpone due to her own illness. In May Minogue revealed she had breast cancer and cancelled her planned Australian tour. She has since undergone treatment. Her doctors will not yet allow her to reschedule her tour.

Young cancer patients confide in pop princess

Cancer survivor Kylie Minogue took her fighting spirit to the children yesterday.

Pop princess Minogue, 37, recovering from breast cancer treatment, put her own health issues on hold to meet young cancer sufferers at Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital. Pretty in pink, upbeat and bright, a smiling Minogue showed she is certainly winning the fight of her life. It also marked Minogue's first public appearance since being diagnosed with breast cancer on May 17.

Yesterday's secret meeting was organised by kids-with-cancer support group, Challenge. Minogue did not comment on her cancer battle but she listened intently to brave youngsters and their dreams.

Since May 17, Minogue has undergone surgery to remove the cancer, with further treatments including radiotherapy. Earlier this week, Minogue's sister, Dannii, revealed Kylie was headed for a full recovery.

"I heard she's going to be fine," Dannii said. "She's really lucky her cancer has been treatable. She's going to get well and is getting better by the day. She's been inspirational – she's a fighter."

Kylie is recovering at a hideaway near Melbourne. Sources say Minogue called friends in London, after Thursday night's bombings, to express concern and sorrow. Minogue has been based in London since 1990.

Minogue has not been short of well-wishers and, aside from Australia's love and support, has received get-well cards from Prince Charles, Sir Elton John and Robbie Williams.

Shelooks amazing and is amazing as a person! To share yourself with people like that after going through surgery, not to mention

The American media sucks. If she was galavanting around town with Ben Affleck, she would be a big star but I think if you are going to make people famous for their personal lives, why not focus on this, on the fact that she got cancer at rather young age and is something that is more interesting/fascinating than doing some lame actor, IMHO.

I recently saw her on an old episode of "Vicar Of Dibley" and she looked cute but looks much better here. I hope she makes a full recovery and releases a book along with an amazing comeback CD.

in America, she's a 2-time 1-hit-wonder. you can hardly expect the public at large to know who she is, or care all that much about ANYTHING she's doing. she's not a star here, so there's simply no reason for them to cover her.

oh, and wouldn't it be a little tasteless if she finally won her claim to fame in America with a Cancer-survivor story? would seem like cashing in on trajedy, and pretty pathetic, if you ask me.

"Love At First Sight" did pretty well on the charts, so she isn't just a 2 hit wonder. I don't think she should become famous for this but I would much rather hear about it then manish Jenifer Garner marrying fat himbo Ben Affleck.

Who's this Madonna?

Is she the granny in white singing about ray of lights on Live8, and then she screamed? Her scream made me think of Darth Vader's NOOOOO at the end of The Revenge Of The Sith.

Anyways. GREAT thread. Goodwill all around. Love Kylie's appraoch! She reminds me of Lady Di visiting hospitals.

Major Advances in Breast Cancer Research
Outlook Optimistic for Women, Including Singer Kylie Minogue

By Kevin McGowan and Paul Sisco
The Epoch Times
Jul 14, 2005

HIGH SPIRITS: Following successful surgery to remove cancerous lump, singer Kylie Minogue’s prospects of recovery look good according to doctor. (MJ Kim/Getty Images)

World famous singer with 37 hit singles in the U.K, 36-year-old Kylie Minogue, was diagnosed with breast cancer on Tuesday, and had a successful operation on Friday to remove a cancerous lump. “I feel confident that we caught the cancer in time and that she is now on the road to complete recovery,'' Dr. Jenny Senior said at a briefing at Cabrini Hospital, Melbourne where the operation was performed. The singer's ”spirits are high.''
Breast cancer has become the most common in the U.K, with an average of 41,000 cases diagnosed every year. These statistics average that one in every nine women will develop breast cancer at some point in her life. Early diagnosis of the disease and improved treatments in recent years have improved the mortality rate. Despite this, the United Kingdom still has one of the highest mortality rates worldwide. A spokesperson for N.H.S Greater Glasgow said, “Breast cancer is the most common form of female cancer, accounting for nearly 30% of all cases of cancer in women.”

The precise reason why women develop breast cancer is still unknown to present medical science, although some likely causes have been identified as genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Scientists involved with these studies have identified two genes which are more likely to be defective in women with breast cancer. These genes have also been blamed for other forms of cancer. Despite this, these genes only account for 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases. Other factors identified are levels of the female sex hormone oestrogen, which research has shown may be linked to increased risks of developing breast cancer. Similarly, women who regularly take certain types of hormone replacement therapy are also considered at a higher risk. Interestingly, women who have their first child later in life also appear to be at higher risk of developing breast cancer. Scientists still however remain unable to detect the root cause of the disease.

Most women who develop breast cancer do not need to have a breast removed. In most cases, if the tumor is small enough in relation to the breast, a procedure called "lumpectomy" is carried out. This procedure removes only the cancerous lump and not the breast itself. This operation is sometimes followed with radiotherapy to prevent the re-occurrence of the cancer. In addition, it is common for surgeons to remove lymph nodes from under the arms of the patient to determine if the cancer cells have spread to the lymphatic system. This lymphatic system is a network of vessels which link different parts of the body.

For women with breast cancer who undergo "mastectomy" (the removal of a breast), surgeons are now able to reconstruct a breast using implants, fat from other parts of the body such as the tummy, and even a back muscle can be bent round to form a new breast. These procedures allow surgeons to closely mimic the shape and size of the other breast. In a lot of these cases, many surgeons perform the "mastectomy” and re-construction together. It is important to remember though that most patients do not undergo this type of surgery.

In recent years the level of research and support for those suffering from breast cancer has increased. The disease can also be found in the men, though it is less common. The most effective way to tackle breast cancer is knowledge and early treatment. There are simple checks which women and men should carry out regularly:

* A change in shape, size or outline of the breast
* Any lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
* Puckering or dimpling of the skin
* Unusual pain or discomfort
* Flaking skin or discharge from the nipple

Statistics have shown that 75 % of breast cancer cases are discovered through self examination. In addition, regularly performing these checks will allow you to recognize what ‘normal’ is, so any later problems can later be detected. Along with this the N.H.S provides mammograms- x-rays of the breasts yearly as part of the N.H.S national screening program. Eight out of ten lumps turn out not to be cancerous, although any physical changes in the breasts should still be reported to the doctor for re-assurance.

Some doctors who treat cancer are saying we've entered a new golden era of cancer research. They're upbeat about current research and new treatment options that are saving lives.

Dr. Karen Antman, who directs cancer research at the National Institute of Health outside Washington DC, is one of those who are optimistic. She points to three major advances: drug development, vaccine research, and vast improvements in imaging and body scanning technologies.

Better screening means earlier diagnosis; means more treatment options. Vaccines are becoming more effective against certain cancers, there is a rapid development of better drugs with fewer side affects, and there is a new diagnostic tool called gene chip technology.

"There are now chips where you can put down a few thousand genes in a tiny little area on a slide, and then you can drop a biological fluid, or piece of tumor onto that slide, and some of the genes will be increased in activity, and some of the genes will be decreased in activity if you compare cancer and normal adjacent tissue, and it's emerging that certain diseases such as breast cancer that are treated with hormones or lymphomas, you can predict better on the basis of which genes are activated or repressed than you can on the basis of the kinds of medical things that we knew in the past, so gene chip technology is allowing us to tell a patient 'you're at high risk and therefore we're going to treat you more aggressively, or, you're at low risk and therefore you don't need the side effects of being treated aggressively," says Dr. Antman.

If you would like to receive screening or would like to learn more about breast cancer you should contact your G.P. Information can also be found at www.nationalbreastcancer.org and www.breastcancer.org
