Cool. Its just that I have met people who talk and only buy really obscure music, often stating that "oh this is shit, its just commercial shit for the masses" etc.....Sorry, I know t aint u or gangsterfam. I remember u saying u liked "xanadu", which is a good example of considered cheese. lol

oh, believe me...when i go to my local independant wrecka stow, they have the greatest selection and i can always find new stuff in the used section for cheep, and i thank my lucky stars that they're in walking distance (though i'm sure my checking account curses their existance lol ), but whenever i ask a question or even take something up to buy, i always get the most MURDEROUS looks, as if i'm sullying their precious establishment by daring to buy something that's not on the approved indie rock cred top ten du jour. just a few weeks ago i went in asking for the new saint etienne album (and they're not exactly ashlee simpson over here, ya know), and the counter person looked at me like i'd just raped her puppy. rolleyes

when i'm excited about music that's obscure, i like sharing it with people. i like music because i think it's fun or good, not because it's obscure or some kind of badge of indie cred. life's too short for that nonsense.

All I have to say is...Amen!

nice thing about my local wrecka stow is that they seem to get used prince stuff in pretty regularly, and they don't appreciate any of it so they mark it down way, way, WAY low. i've been able to stock up on quite a few CD singles for my collection by getting stuff for like 1.99 a pop. thumbs up!

and they sell 'come' and 'chaos & disorder' for 2.99 used, too. mad

meanwhile, they're selling used copies of 'musicology' for 10.99 used, and they're even selling the free concert copies used for 6.99! nuts

I've seen Emancipation for $6 and Crystal Ball new for $9.99 where I used to live. Insanity I tell you!

Oh and on a very tangentially related side note, I swear to god that I saw this guy in a restaurant on my drive home from Chicago when I saw you back in May.

I don't know for certain that it was him, cuz I didn't ask, but I swear it was.

And the picture I took from the Intonation link you posted.

Yeah. I think it's better and more interesting than most of what's going on in that dance-rock/new wave reviaval movement.

So why were folks giving you funny looks?

it doesn't sound like dance-rock to me. it just sounds like straight-forward, kinda hard rock with maybe some electronic stuff going on here and there. maybe i need to listen to it more.

and i have no idea why people were giving me funny looks. nobody at the festival was, of course - it was when we were out on michigan avenue later that night among all the suburban tourists that they were all looking sideways at the shirt. i guess they've never seen guys with elephant trunks before. shrug

I think this is one of the coolest things about the org. People are so enthusiastic about ALL types of music ~ it's like a fever ~ example~ the recent thread about Miles Davis and Agharta ~ something I've wanted to hear forever but reading people's experiences make it essential! Keep sharing all of you!!!!!

Well normally, they get filed under punk and hardcore. But it's a little too weird for that. They're known for the disco and dance-rock elements in their drumming. The bass and the singing are far too wild for that though. I don't know how to categorize them exactly, but I know they get lumped in a lot of times with that current batch of revivalist bands, however unfair.

i don't see them as revivalist chic at all - they're way too noisy and RAWK to be lumped with the likes of franz ferdinand or arcade fire. there might be something kind of retro in the way they're branding themselves, but i don't hear anything especially derivative in the music.
