I didn't get my own player until 1992, and I got a copy of Like a Prayer on CD (had it on cassette). That's still the copy I have of that album to this day.
That was one of my first CD's too. I got it on December 27 as a get well present from my parents. I woke up from my surgery, they all talked to me for awhile, asked me what I wanted and ran off to get me some CD's. Sweet! I haven't gotten Missy's new CD yet. Maybe I need to have me a surgery!

I got my first CD boombox in the fall of 1989 when I was in college. That was the main reason I got into Columbia House so I could build up my music collection with "free" CDs.

Did you cut it out from a magazine. Before mp3s, I use to get columbia house cd's, copy them to tape and send them back to columbia house.

First of all, CDs were too damn expensive back in the 1980s. That's one of the main reasons I never bought one until 1994.
Also, most albums that were released on CD back then were pop/rock and most of the R&B albums that were released on CD were either old albums that had crossed over or new albums that they thought might cross over. I remember the first R&B station in my area to get a CD player. This was back in 1986 and they said on a certain date, they would feature "digital stereo". After that date came, they still had their turntables, but every now and then, they had a special station ID that said "WJMI...now in digital stereo". This ID was always followed by a song that was considered old at the time and had been a crossover hit when it had been popular. Most of the new songs I heard behind that particular station ID were Whitney Houston songs. Andy is a four letter word.
