Boz Scaggs appreciation thread

Here's a guy who is truly underrated.Over the weekend,I was watching his concert DVD 'Greatest Hits Live' which was released last year. It'a an excellent performance, featuring not only the well-known hits ("Lowdown","Lido Shuffle","Look What You Done To Me",etc) but also several blues classics ("It All Went Down The Drain","Ask Me Bout Nothin' But The Blues").Boz is incredible, singing these songs with passion and his distinctive, soulful vocals. He also plays guitar on several numbers. This show is also available as a 2-CD set.

The first time I heard Boz Scaggs was in 1976,when his 'Silk Degrees' album took the world by storm. The hit single "Lowdown" is one of the smoothest, most intoxicating jams of the 70s.In the summer of '76,this song was everywhere.Other superb songs like "Lido Shuffle","It's Over","What Can I Say","Georgia","Harbor Lights" and "We're All Alone" ensured that 'Silk Degrees' reached classic status. This is one of those dominating albums in which nearly every song was played on the radio.

I continue to follow his career and I'm amazed at the consistent qualiy of his work. His 2001 album 'Dig' is just incredible! It's a shame that it got ignored by the masses;it's easily his strongest, most consistent album since 'Silk Degrees'.There's a song on there called "Miss Riddle" that is truly a masterpiece. If you're a fan of his and you don't have this album, rush out and get it asap!!

Any other Boz Scaggs fans around here? What are your favorite songs?

Soft Rock Classic of the Day:

music "Look What You Done To Me" by Boz Scaggs (1980) music

(written by Boz Scaggs)

Hope they never end this song
this could take us all night long
I looked at the moon and I felt blue
then I looked again and I saw you
Eyes like fire in the night
bridges burning with their light
Now I'll have to spend the whole night through
and honey yes,I'll have to spend it all on you

(chorus)
Love, look what you've done to me
I never thought I'd fall again so easily
Oh love, you wouldn't lie to me
leading me to feel this way

They might fade and turn to stone
let's get crazy all alone
hold me closer than you'd ever dare
close your eyes and I'll be there
And after all is said and done
after all,you are the one
take me up the stairs and through the door
take me where we don't care anymore

(chorus)
Love, look what you've done to me
I never thought I'd fall again so easily
Oh love,you wouldn't lie to me,would you?
leading me to feel this way

I only know a few Boz Scaggs songs. There are a couple I really like - Lowdown (of course) and Lido Shuffle. Though he wrote it, I don't like his take on We're All Alone. His voice sounds crazy, almost Muppet-ish on it. I prefer Rita Coolidge's version to his own. Look What You Done to Me...I dunno. That's one of those songs that they wore out on soap operas in the early 80s. Everytime somebody's lover would walk out the door ("And I'm never coming back!"), it seems like that's the song the scorned one would cue up.

lol

I always hoped that Luther Vandross would cover this song.Imagine what he could have done with that beautiful melody.

I tend to gravitate to his ballads...

You Make It So Hard (To Say No)
What Can I Say
We're All Alone
Miss Sun
Look What You've Done To Me
You Can Have Me Anytime

...and "midtempo shit". cool

I also love "JoJo",which has a cool,laid-back R&B sound....not unlike "Lowdown."

Of course,I love classic stuff, but I'm also I really diggin' some of his more recent work, too:

2001's Dig
,
especially tracks like "Miss Riddle", "Sarah" and "Thanks To You" ,

and I also enjoyed 1994's Some Change

, with tracks like "I'll Be The One", and "Call Me"...

1988's Other Roads had some nice tracks too, like the Marcus Miller- arranged "Cool Running", and the Bobby Caldwell-penned tune, "Night Of Van Gogh"(actually, I'm surprised that Caldwell hasn't done this tune himself, it's got his sound all over it)....

I'm forever recommending this album to people. The song "Miss Riddle" is Boz at his best. The whole album is high quality, with one well-produced track after another.

U know I dig me some Boz! Grew up with this. My mom had all of his albums. Ran a thread about "Lowdown". I truly ADORE that song! I dig a lot of his stuff.
