they just come off as utterly disposable to me. they don't bother me nor do they impress me in the least. they just seem like a group that, five years from now, nobody's gonna know or care about. maybe if the most outstanding thing about the group wasn't fergie's boobs, they'd be taken more seriously. shrug

exactly. i do vaguely remember them being more hiphop like the roots but once fergie came they changed.

exactly. I kind of liked them with it was just the three of them, then when they blew up with these annoying songs with that chick, I couldn't for the life of me remember why I had liked them in the first place. Their music is incredibly corny and lame. Their image is spastic and annoying. Fergie looks like an alien from Farscape and can never live down her stint on Kids Incorporated.

Ok, I went totally crazy about two weeks ago and actually BOUGHT Elephunk and Monkey Business, mainly because, I admit it, I actually LIKE the single "Don't Phunk With My Heart". Or at least, I did. Now I am utterly tired of it and quite ashamed because I feel like I have sold out myself for buying their crappy albums.

What I find hilarious is that the song "Like That", which features Q-Tip and Cee-Lo actually has Will.I.Am. rapping, "Black Eyed Peas represent selling out".

I couldn't believe my ears. I used to really like the BEPs before Fergie came on the scene and "Where Is The Love?" happened....but then I felt like "Don't Phunk With My Heart" was a good pop song and I found myself liking other stuff on the albums. I thought perhaps I had got them wrong. I hadn't...I just had a momentary lapse of taste. I felt like buying something current, poppy and disposable for a change. Now I want my money back. sad And my soul. sad wink

I kind of liked the Bridging The Gap album when it was first released. But the last few years have been awful. Thier OutKast envy is a huge turnoff, to say nothing about their Democratic National Convention appearance.

I admit I am totally clueless as to who they are, though I always knew that melody line/lyric was lifted. But "Don't Phunk With My Heart" is the second song I have liked with that as a soundbite/sample (the first being a song on Kylie's "Body Language"). So it looks like I have to check out whoever they are, doesn't it!

God I am sounding so POP today. But that's just it, "pop" has become like a four letter word in the last 10 years or so. It shouldn't be like that.

nod I liked Gwen's album until I realized that about the only good pop songs with some original elements on there were "What You Waiting For" and "Cool". All the others feature a poorly-used sample or I can find a soundalike from the mid-80's giggle

Why ask why? You seem to have all the answers. You seem to think that their songs are better now because of Fergie. You are baiting in such a way that leads to you wanting people to point the finger at the "white girl" and blame her. I gotta be honest, I expected her to be solo by now and the Black Eyed Peas to be on their way to hip-hop history like the Beatnuts and Das EFX.
The last time I saw BEP was pre-Fergie. They toured with a band instead of just a DJ, which was impressive. I liked some of the material (That's The Joint, That's The Jam, etc.). They were headed in the direction they are in now since half of their material live was hip-hop and some was very watery pop. For those (like you) who tend to think they are better for being more pop-ish; that's fine. I was hoping they would go more the direction of Slum Village and drop songs like "Tainted" and move towards a progressive hip-hop thing, but alias they didn't. Doesn't matter to me as I'm not buying their CDs anyway. It just seemed that they had the potential to help move hip hop in a different direction instead of becoming commercialized fluff. Oh well, somebody's gotta do it. May as well be these jokers. I think they will realize the error of their ways once Fergie gets offered a large enough deal, goes solo and leaves their asses as just a sideroad on her path to stardom and they look around and realize that they lost their core audience of underground hip-hop fans and have to figure out ways to diversify their funds to keep from going broke because they can't even give away a record anymore...but that's just what I think. They've crossed the line from being progressive to being corny. As soon as their popularity dies down, they are probably history anyway (except for Fergie, who will move forward).

Gwen is totally different kettle of fish. She's deliberately referencing those sounds. Her record is mostly solid and though there are "play it safe" moments, I think it is quite adventurous for a mid-'00's pop record, much like Kelis' "Tasty".

LAMB is much less adventurous IMHO than Tasty, which dared to be different (at least with respect to mainstream tastes). Gwen's album - not so much. "Millionaire" alone is better than anything on LAMB by far.

1) I'm not trying to set up a flame-bait. Beside, that's not my style.

2) I started this thread to provoke a much need BEP.dialogue. And it's working because we're all talking!!! wink

3) BTW, I was already a BEP fan since the second album (Bridging The Gap). And I was very familar with Fergie's former girl band Wild Ochild (and yes, she can sing IMHO).

4) With underground or mainstream success, the BEP never stop being themselves. They always dare to be different. OutKast is the same way and those guys (Big Boi & Andre) are making money and I don't see ANYONE bashing the hell out of them for going mainstream.

But with BEP, there's a problem!

All I asking for is a bunch of second opinions and/or the facts that can help me understand....why?

So let have a great discussion already! cool

I never heard of them before Where is the love. Then to my dismay it was number 1 for about 25 years. They have the most annoying music and lead singer. Just when I thought it was safe to listen to commercial radio.. don't phunk with my heart comes out to distress my earholes. Ouch.

I really can't see what is good about them. And the vid seems to rip of 'Hey Ya' and that really annoyed me

I never brought Monkey Business (BEP's new album) yet. But after watching the video, I don't think Don't Phunk With My Heart was a good choice of a single.

And I counting on the rest of the album to have better songs.

That's quite the opinion there. I'd put virtually everything on LAMB ahead of "Millionaire". There are much better tracks on Tasty.

I dont hate BEP, nor do I really like them either, but they did definately sell out though.

When they first started, they were on some real authentic hiphop shit (like Roots, Slum Village, Jurassic 5, etc.), which I will admit these days wont always get the bills paid. All of that changed with the Elephunk album - they got some the Village People-meets-hip hop shit and just went commercial pop musically. They went from breakdancing to having this white girl shake her ass. Fergie pretty much outshines everybody else; she's like the lead singer/dancer and the other three guys are her backup who do the music even though they rap alot. But overall its more like Fergie and The Black Eye Peas now.

I remember they acutally said once in an interview when fans see them, they mainly rushed up to Fergie. LOL! biggrin

But I aint mad, I dont hate...I understand it is, getcha money.

1) Our differences aside, the "Village People-meets- hip hop" statement really is funny in it's context!!!lol

2) To an extend, you're right. Fergie & The Black Eyed Peas?

I was check out this european based electronic dance club magazine sometime last year. And there was an article covering the BEP's tour.

The european fans really love BEP in all honesty. But without question, Fergie gets THE biggest pop of the 4 members! eek
