Most mainstream R & B and Hip-Hop today has got so far up its own arse with its faux-futurism that there is no music left. All style, very little substance. That's the reason. It's all about product these days. MTV (and TV in general) has made people too visually-trained. People have forgotten how to really listen and appeciate the work that goes into real music. Kids these days just want something that sounds good as a ring tone. Music has become just another accessory, along with your phone and your iPod.

Ironically, the BEPs (who I am having a hard-time deciding as to whether they are brilliant or complete sellouts these days) have a song about this on their latest album which addresses this very issue, called "They Don't Want Music" (featuring James Brown).

Y'all should have a listen to that one - good message:

"They don't want music; they don't know how to use it".
