Best new funk Whats the best new funk cd's out there? I know there's good smooth funk soul, but where is the heavy, chunky kind o' funk (like bootsy, ohio players and parliament)? I've found a few good ones (freekbass and slapbak for example) but overall there aren't really any new bands brining the funk, are there?

Is there such a thing as funk anymore? I was flipping through the channels one day and came across "Soul Train" (which nowadays is an embarassment to it's memory) and the host was telling one of the artists how funky their song was. The song was pure hip hop, midtempo, and the furthest thing from funk. People use the term "funky" loosely these days because they don't even seem to even know what funk is. Andy is a four letter word.

I'd have to Say Van Hunt's self titled ablum. He's a new artist and some people call him a prince clone almost but his music has ver little do with prince aside that he plays all the instruments by himself.

Agree...Has nothing to do with Prince at all..... But there is a song on his album called "Hold My Hand" that would've been right for Prince... His album is more Sly Stone & Curtis Mayfield influence.... Plus, Prince isn't the first person to play all the instruments by himself.... That was such a big deal at that time, because he was a child prodigy.... [Edited 7/4/05 19:41pm]

anything on the SOULFIRE label (they just put out a 2 CD overview). All recorded in the last 5 years, but sounds like it was done 30 years ago. Some artists are: Lee Fields, JD & The Dynamite Band, Whitefield Brothers...
Likewise for Sharon Jones. She's on her own label, Daptone Records, and also has the Sugarman 3, which features Bernard Purdie (if you don't know who he is, you have no business in a funk post until you learn...)... As for some rock-funk, it gets no better than Robert Randolph and the Family Band. It's like listening to Funkadelic, Sly, and the Allman Bros at the same time... One of the greatest guitarists playing today...

I like "Knock the Walls Down" and I play the intro to Invincible just to hear Bootsy say "Freeeekbaaas this is Bootsaaay, where art thou?"
Have to check out Slapbak. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

Stop sleeping on this group:
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Sharon Jones sounds like some old Laura Lee, Lyn Collins 1969 funk type ish. plus a Drummer, Bassist, 2 guitarists, and a horn section - a real band!

Van Hunt and Meshell are the ones that are keeping the funk and soul alive. B and Pali just hipped me to Lewis Taylor (thanks . Another one that is keeping the funk alive is Bill Laswell. His CD's like "Funkcronimicon" and the stuff he produced for Bootsy and Buckethead is pretty slammin'. Funk ain't dead..it's just in hiding until the "cats in the know" bring it back.

This is the real funk, dirty, gritty, raw and soulful. Sugarman 3 is amazing as well but all of these cd's must be out of print because they're expensive. A million thanks! t/A much appreciation Thanks Slave Lettuce - The Flu I saw their drummer, Eric Deitch playing with John Scofield last year. Btw, the main groove in Nyack reminds me of something I heard by a certain someone. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
