Anyway, its a toughie.

Paul cannot be touched when it comes to amount of instruments he can play. Even more then Prince proberly?

Paul is superior in every aspect and a natural star.

I doubt John would be star as a solo artist with out coming from the beatles. John is more introspective and if it wasn't for him I doubt the Beatles would have taken it to the next level creatively.

John's solo stuff is truly classic, I love Paul's voice, but John's albums are amazing.

Yeah, Paul's stuff is disposable - it's a bit like an audio sand castle, recordings that just wash away with the tide when they end. But at his best (Band on the Run full album, Silly Love Songs, things like that) it's great ear candy - not the kind of thing you'd want a steady diet of, but it can feel pretty miraculous when it's playing.

I like Paul's voice and his 1970s output more compared to John's 1970s output.

Overal , i think Paul made the better melodies but with corny lyrics

think he composed songs like 'Blackbird' , 'Michelle' , And I Love Her'
and so on , although they were credited to both

I like Paul better, but he did nothing like plastic ono band.

Lennon made some great music, but his pseudo-intellectual, naked, hairy hippy bullshit annoyed me even as a kid. Unlike a lot of Beatles fans, I don't think Yoko was the anti-Christ. Close, but not quite.

I love Paul McCartney's solo work. He really covered a lot of musical ground in the 70s, even if his 80s output was spotty and just a watered down version of his 70s prime. Paul made great pop and rock music. Maybe it's easier to look at Lennon as a performance artist. One thing is for sure - even after his death, George Harrison doesn't get the props he should have. I'll take his work over Lennon's anyday.

mccartney was clearly the better musician and i would say that he wrote more good songs than lennon but i personally think that lennon was overall greater because he wrote more classics than mccartney, it was lennon that wrote almost all of the early beatles singles that made them worldwide stars. lennon was clearly the better lyricist. i think that mccartney needed lennon more than the other way round...his solo albums prove this i think, and finally, lennon had more of an edge to him which made him more interesting than mccartney.

We never got to hear John solo in a way because Yoko (bless her heart) was always invloved. Maybe his music would have been different solo.

McCartney the better musician, singer, entertainer and melodisist, Lennon the better lyricist and icon. I find it interesting and annoying that people always want to separate the two, like it will characterise the kind of person they are if they can state preference to one or the other. In reality I reckon Paul and John were more similar than people would like to admit.

As for the person saying lennon wrote more classics, im not so sure about that. yes he wrote a lot of the early stuff, but in most cases their early stuff is overlooked for being so formulaic and pop (something youd normally accuse Paul of). If you're talking proper classics, paul wrote Let It Be, Hey jude & Yesterday, three of their most loved, well known songs - they're practically standards not just classics.

To be honest outside the Beatles I dont think either produced outstanding albums. They produced enough excellent stuff to make great albums between them, just proving that they needed each other. When they were competing for space on the same record, they weren't as prone to their excesses, particularly when they knew they would have to get the others approval.

I still view all their solo stuff as collective. I make compilations based on each year in the 70's in which i put all their best solo stuff from that year on their. Do it and youll see that the best Beatles stuff was actually yet to come.
