Soundscan Update (22/06/05): MJ, Mariah, Madonna, Janet, etc.

USA

SoundScan Information and commentary courtesy of JRKing. Thanks again Mary.

Sales For The Week Ending June 19th, 2005/Billboard Issue Date: July 2nd, 2005.

The One, Dangerous: The Short Films, etc.), material recorded with The Jacksons, and Motown era solo and Jackson 5 albums.

Rank, Title, Sales This Week, Sales Last Week, +/- percentage

MICHAEL JACKSON - 27,166 units

1. Number Ones: 8,660 (3,631) (+139%) (#134 on Billboard 200, #49 on Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, 27 weeks on the chart.)

2. Thriller (Special Edition): 5,839 (2,423) (+141%) (Top 5 on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart and Top 30 on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Chart.)

3. Number Ones (Video): 4,785 (2,300) (+108%) (#13 on the Billboard Comprehensive Music Videos Chart, 65 weeks on the chart.)

5. Off the Wall (Special Edition): 1,603 (619) (+159%)

6. Greatest Hits: HIStory (Video): 719 (327) (+120%)

7. Bad (Special Edition): 704 (238) (195%)

12. Blood on the Dance Floor: 68 (35) (+94%)

Notes: Funny what a "Not Guilty/Innocent/Vindication" week can do to one's sales! razz

As some of you might already know, Michael Jackson made a nice swing back up in sales and airplay last week in the USA and abroad.

As previously reported, Number Ones posted a 138% increase with sales of 8,660 units. That figure has landed Michael back on the Billboard 200 @ #134 and Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart @ #49.

Well, that's not all as ten titles in Michael Jackson's catalog posted a 100%+ sales increase.

Cumulatively, Michael's entire catalog posted a 138% sales increase selling 27,166 units last week!

From the nearly 6,000 units Thriller sold (which incidentally has landed the album back in the Top 5 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart and Top 30 of the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Chart) to the nearly 5,000 units the Number Ones DVD shifted (which also boosted the title into the Top 15 of the Billboard Comprehensive Music Videos Chart) to the 3,000 units Greatest Hits - HIStory Volume I sold (which has likely put the album in the Top 20 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Catalog Chart), last week was indeed a great week saleswise for MJ.

As previously mentioned in other chart wrap ups, the tally below does not include sales for The Ultimate Collection (4 CD/1 DVD), single sales, certain music DVD titles (eg. The One, Dangerous: The Short Films, etc.), material recorded with The Jacksons, and Motown era solo and Jackson 5 albums. One can imagine how much higher Michael's tally would be if those sales totals were included.

MARIAH CAREY - 172,494 units (9,494 units excluding The Emancipation Of Mimi)
(excluding Live at Madison Square Garden DVD and "It's Like That" and "We Belong Together" digital single sales)

1. The Emancipation Of Mimi: 163,000 (+8%) (#4 Billboard 200 and #1 on Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart)
2. Greatest Hits (2 CD): 4,111 (+11%)
3. #1's: 2,661 (+6%)
4. Remixes (2 CD): 592 (+8%)
5. Charmbracelet: 364 (+7%)
6. #1's (Video): 284 (+7%)
7. Music Box: 269 (+4%)
8. Butterfly: 254 (-2%)
9. Glitter: 188 (-)
10. Rainbow: 176 (+1%)
11. Around the World (Video): 159 (+10%)
12. Daydream: 157 (+28%)
13. Mariah Carey: 135 (+19%)
14. Through the Rain (Single): 80 (+3%)
15. Emotions: 43 (+30%)
16. MTV Unplugged: 21 (-13%)

Notes: The latest album scanned another 162,000 and change (passing the 2 million mark in 10 weeks time.) Rainbow passed that mark sooner, but did not stay in the upper region of the chart like the new album has. Among catalog/older albums, Greatest Hits is flirting with the catalog top 50 (it was No. 58 the prior week, when it scanned 3,700+); it increases this week, but misses that mark since sales in general increased.

CHER - 7,669 units
(excluding Live Farewell Tour CD)

1. The Farewell Tour (Video): 3,449 (-11%)
2. The Very Best of Cher (2 CD): 1,759 (+13%)
3. Very Best of Cher (Video): 811 (+17%)
4. The Best of Cher: Millennium Collection (2004 edition): 513 (+15%)
5. The Very Best of Cher (Deluxe): 377 (+5%)
6. If I Could Turn Back Time: Cher’s Greatest Hits: 242 (+15%)
7. Half Breed: 133 (+30%)
8. Heart of Stone: 129 (-7%)
9. Believe: 96 (+2%)
10. The Best of Cher: Millennium Collection (First Edition): 86 (+8%)
11. Live In Concert (Video, 1999): 74 (-6%)

Notes: Still not sure why Cher's Farewell Tour DVD is sellign at the levels it is again. Very Best of Cher continues to sell comfortably (I believe it's officially a catalog album now).

MADONNA - 4,693 units

1. The Immaculate Collection: 2,243 (+7%)
2. GHV2: 297 (-6%)
3. Ray Of Light: 234 (+12%)
4. Something To Remember: 224 (+24%)
5. Like A Virgin: 193 (-6%)
6. The Immaculate Collection (Video): 184 (+4%)
7. Remixed & Revisited: 138 (+1%)
8. Madonna: 136 (-2%)
9. American Life: 129 (+4%)
10. Music: 120 (-4%)
11. The Video Collection 93:99 (Video): 118 (+9%)
12. True Blue: 111 (+7%)
13. Like A Prayer: 83 (-)
14. Girlie Show: Live Down Under (Video): 83 (+15%)
15. Ciao, Italia: Live From Italy (Video): 66 (-7%)
16. Drowned World Tour 2001 (Video): 61 (+7%)
17. Erotica: 57 (+2%)
18. You Can Dance: 56 (-2%)
19. Bedtime Stories: 55 (-26%)
20. I'm Breathless: 54 (+29%)
21. Evita: 51 (+4%)

Notes: Madonna's The Immaculate Collection nudges up a bit, after what *may* have been its lowest sales tally since its release (though I can't 100% confirm that). GHV2 drops below 300 units (yikes), and Ray of Light continues to shine best in sales, among the studio albums. Last year at this time, the sales were higher, with the Re-Invention Tour going on. Upcoming propjects later this year should provide a spark in catalog sales.

JANET JACKSON - 3,131 units

1. Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 (album): 708 (+19%)
2. Damita Jo: 428 (+6%)
3. Rhythm Nation 1814: 379 (+3%)
4. From janet. To Damita Jo (Video): 375 (-7%)
5. janet.: 366 (+11%)
6. All For You (album): 242 (+5%)
7. Control: 225 (+16%)
8. The Velvet Rope: 202 (-7%)
9. Live in Hawaii (Video): 125 (-13%)
10. All For You (CD/DVD): 43 (+10%)
11. Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 (Video): 38 (+29%)

Notes: Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 rebounds to 700+ units. janet. drops to #5 on the Janet list, a position it's not that accustomed to.

WHITNEY HOUSTON - 2,046 units

1. The Greatest Hits (2 CD): 1,002 (+12%)
2. The Bodyguard: 270 (-1%)
3. The Greatest Hits (Video): 244 (+7%)
4. Whitney Houston: 136 (-8%)
5. The Preacher's Wife: 115 (-3%)
6. My Love Is Your Love: 85 (+37%)
7. Whitney: 83 (-19%)
8. Just Whitney: 54 (-26%)
9. The Star Spangled Banner (Single): 35 (-3%)
10. It’s Not Right But it’s Okay (Single): 14 (+56%)
11. I'm Your Baby Tonight: 4 (+33%)
12. One Wish: 4 (+100%)

Notes: The Greatest Hits reaches the 1K mark again as Just Whitney reaches what appears to be its lowest tally yet.
