mike needs 2 call quincy up..get some of the best session musicians (past and present) and some of the best pop songwriters (past and present..and definitely have rod temperton on board). NO guest rappers..NO guest singers..go far far faaaaar away from any distractions and make an album that's pleasing to them. it can still be done but the clock is ticking away... from http://www.prince.org/msg/8/149735 Okay, THAT'S blatant!! Actually, that looks vaguely familiar, I think I remember reading that thread/post!! "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

So I'm curious who here will be picking up The Essential Michael Jackson when it's released this Tuesday?
Since my local HMV is currently having a promotion where they're selling the two Essential series albums for $35, I'll probably pick up the Sly & The Family Stone set as well since so many of you seem to be raving about it. I'm looking forward to this set to see if the radio edits of Black Or White, In The Closet, Will You Be There and Who Is It are included. Also, I still wish the UK version was being released here since it includes They Don't Care About Us and Earth Song.

I have every one of those songs on at least 2-3 other CDs and at least 2-3 other different formats. [Edited 7/15/05 7:13am] Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

All of these greatest hits sets are confusing me.
Everybody has these songs already "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

No, that was up with Number Ones. The Ultimate Collection was a one-off deal he did. Everything else from now on is Sony's doing. No new or unreleased music from MJ on Sony anymore, unless a new deal is signed.

I reckon the Dangerous tracks will be mostly edits 'cos I think disc two would run over time otherwise. Some of them buggers are long.

amit1234 said: Well, it was just a matter of time before someone at Sony BMG decided to "cash in" on the latest news. On July 5th, Epic will release the two-CD collection The Essential Michael Jackson. Although I'm a ted fed up with the slew of Jackson greatest hits releases over the past five years, I'm glad that the focus in now slowly returning back to his music.
Plus, Luther Vandross, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. all have albums released under The Essential series so at least he'll be in good company. Plus, it's nice that there will finally be a decent 2 disc collection although the generic packaging does disappoint me. Pleasant surprises: The inclusion of "Dangerous" (the title track that was never commercially released as a single). I believe it's inclusion is justified based on the number of times Jackson has performed the song in public and on award shows plus the fact it's the title track from a 28 million+ selling album. BTW, holy shit at the inclusion of eight songs from Bad, an album that always gets short changed by some but yielded quite the bucket load of hits. Also, it's nice to finally welcome "Will You Be There" (#7 USA, #9 UK), "Who Is It" (#14 USA, #10 UK), "Leave Me Alone" (#2 UK), "Human Nature" (#7 USA), and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" (#10 USA, #11 UK) to the fold as they all make their first appearance on a Michael Jackson greatest hits CD. Songs missing: "One More Chance" (#81 USA, #5 UK), "Butterflies" (#14 USA), "Scream" (#5 USA, #3 UK), "Earth Song" (#1 UK), "They Don't Care About Us" (#30 USA, #4 UK), "Stranger In Moscow" (#4 UK), "Jam" (#26 USA, #12 UK), "Give In To Me" (#2 UK), "Liberian Girl" (#13 UK), "Girlfriend" (#41 UK), plus a slew of Jacksons/Jackson 5 hits that obviously couldn't make the cut due to time restrictions. Disc/Side 1 1. I Want You Back 2. ABC 3. The Love You Save 4. Got To Be There 5. Rockin' Robin 6. Ben 7. Enjoy Yourself 8. Blame It On The Boogie 9. Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) 10. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough 11. Rock With You 12. Off The Wall 13. She's Out Of My Life 14. The Girl Is Mine 15. Billie Jean 16. Beat It 17. Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 18. Human Nature 19. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) 20. Thriller Disc/Side 2 1. Bad 2. I Just Can't Stop Loving You 3. Leave Me Alone 4. The Way You Make Me Feel 5. Man In The Mirror 6. Dirty Diana 7. Another Part Of Me 8. Smooth Criminal 9. Black Or White 10. Heal The World 11. Remember The Time 12. In The Closet 13. Who Is It 14. Will You Be There 15. Dangerous 16. You Are Not Alone 17. You Rock My World [Edited 7/15/05 7:03am] How in the hell did Scream or Scream Louder get overlook

AGAIN
How many more times is this guy going to whore out his past? He has had a Decade of repacking his past songs. The only time he didn't tag on a greatest hits package, It Bombed even with a $60 Million budget. Why would some fan buy yet another greatest hits package? Here is a hint,Get a free CD Rip MP3 Program, Then Place the same first 4 solo albums, Then Chose your own Selection of Songs. Hasn't this Lake been fished dry years ago. Will he ever have the guts to put out another album without a greatest hits tag on?

SPOILER ALERT
I *really* like the design of this set because of: a) the classic Epic logo on each CD; b) the edited Nelson George liner notes; c) the wide array of photographs from the 70's-00's; and d) I think the USA Pop and R&B chart peak is included in the credits for each song. [Edited 7/15/05 16:21pm]

And it hardly bombed. In fact, the entire "HIStory" project yielded a bucketful of successful releases: - HIStory: Past, Present and Future Book I (16 million Double Units) - Greatest Hits: HIStory (Video) (5X platinum in USA) - Blood On The Dance Floor: HIStory In The MIx (6 million) - HIStory On Film - Volume 2 (Video) (3X platinum in USA) - Greatest Hits - HIStory Volume 1 (2001 single disc reissue): (3 million)

I don't even believe that $25-$30m budget thing for Invisible. HIStory had $30m and that stretched to like 7 videos, floating statues and one of the biggest promo campaigns ever. It worked of course in Europe Now compare that to the 2 crappy videos, a few posters and VERY minimal TV advertisments for Invincible. Hell, compare the TV advertising to that of all the young R&B stars that you see on TV every 5 minutes.
Granted, Invincible is his worst solo album. Yes, it didn't live up to expectations, but I just don't believe that inflation over 6 years could have affected the cost of things so much that it's promo budget was the same as HIStory.

Two years to make the record, wasting money at recording studios with big producers. what a waste. probably woulda made a better record in a month.
