This ablum had to grow on me a bit, but now, I gotta agree with you. "Here Comes a City" is my current favorite.

Yeah, it took a while for this album to grab with me as well. Frankly, I had a difficult time getting past the overly compressed and far too bright sounding production. This album really would have benefited from a lusher, softer sound - but the songs are there, I think.

How did you find the sound of the album? Did you find it as off-putting as I did at first? I've heard similar complaints made about the new Sleater-Kinney lp, and I know you're a fan of that act - did you find a similar problem there?

Hey, sorry for the delay...just saw this! Yeah, Oceans Apart sounds a bit weird on some songs. A couple of them even seem to have been recorded too loudly or something. But the songs really carry it at the end of the day, and some of them like "Lavender" are just lovely as is.

SK....arrgh. That album is my favorite of their song-wise. I think it's the most accessible and impassioned thing they've done, and could've turned on a lot of new fans. Corin's singing is less goat-like and Carrie's singing is more on-key....and Janet's drumming....well, she just rules the world as always.

But the production is CRAP. I hate it. It's distorted all over the place just to be challenging, and it's just art-wanky. But I love the band so much that I still play the damn thing anyway, if not as much as "One Beat."

Currently, I'm loving the Hold Steady's Separation Sunday to death. Think it's my favorite of the year so far.

This is a tough one for me, because it's hard to say what counts. If Arcade Fire or Annie count, they would easily be my favorites of the year.

My favorite sure-fire album of 2005 so far is:
