If you were a young artist about to make your first solo album What producer would you pick if you had to use a producer?

I dunno. I think about this sometimes. Cuz I do wanna release albums. But I don't think I'd want the help of some hot shot producer, especially right out of the box. If I didn't produce it myself, I'd probably want a relative unknown. Someone that could help establish my vision with me, not for me. That said, I really miss seeing Flood's name all over my favorite bands' CD's.

For the music I would be doing, it would have to be someone that was a seasoned musician with a Jazz background that could understand what I was doing.
The 1st four names that came to mind... Quincy Jones Marcus Miller Narada Michael Walden Me'Shell Ndegéocello tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Well, in my situation, I have a refined voice with a vast range. My vocal influences are Chaka Kahn, Phyllis Hymen, Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Evelyn Champayne King. With the flexibility of voice, I would need a producer that expereinced flexible. The following producers that I would select would be: Terry Lewis/Jimmy Jam, George Duke, Prince, and Narada Nicheal Walden.

Exactly.I wouldn't want to work with producers who work with many other artists.I want my album to sound distinctive.I would probably choose... Jamiroquai Remy Shand Jamiroquai has been around for awhile, but they have yet to produce another artist.Remy Shand has only been around for a few years, and he has never produced another artist. Both of these guys specialize in a retro-70s styled soul sound (no hip-hop influences whatsover),and that's what I would want for my debut album.Jamiroquai will bring the funk/disco,and Remy will help me come up with some sparkling, soulful ballads.

Actually, and I don't mean to insult anyone's taste here, but I find that the Jamiroquai albums are poorly produced . My job is to compile music profiles for background music in restaurants/ pubs etc, mostly on CD. Jamiroquai tracks are hard to use because, when sat in between tracks by other artists, Jamiroquai songs have a muffled, over-compressed quality to them ,like someone has messed with the treble controls. Seriously, try a side-by-side comparison and you'll see what I mean. The band certainly have their own sound, which is very important for any band, and there are definite plus points to the production too, but where's the treble?! [Edited 6/15/05 3:25am]

what?????
1st album, 3rd album, 10th album I WOULD PRODUCE MYSELF. otherwise I would not record the album. who knows how the record should sound more than I? who knows what instruments & which arrangements & such to do on each track better than I?? I am not "against" someone have someone else produce (or "executive produce") their record- I know that not every musician can or wants to produce themselves.. but if it's ME, if it's about MY music then I am DEFINITELY calling ALL THE SHOTS. no question or doubt about that. I'll see you tonight..

If you had to pick one, who would it be?

Cool thread. I've actually thought about this question and have given it serious thought.

ah, okay..
if I were a young artist working on my 1st album, I would want to have none other than DONALD FAGEN & WALTER BECKER to produce my album. their AMAZING knowledge of music, their music proficiency, their songwriting ability & their METICULOUS.. attention to detail would ensure that not only would my album have the influence of 2 very good musicians.. but think of all that I would LEARN from working with them! I'll see you tonight..

Based on the responses, i'll clarify my needs for the producer.
All my material would be self-written and arranged so what I would need the "producer" for... 1) a set of emotionally unattached ears. 2) a potential collaborator to embellish my ideas. (which is why I specified a seasoned musician with a Jazz background) Otherwise i'd be fighting THE MAN (record company) for creative control. Sounds familiar tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
