I will give it another chance. But it was just SO difficult. I've never heard anything remotely like it. Another chance? Man, you'll probably need at least two dozen. But please, please, PLEASE persevere with it. Trust me, once you "get" it, it'll never leave you.

But please, please, PLEASE persevere with it. Trust me, once you "get" it, it'll never leave you. Hopefully in a good way. That shit is nightmarish! I was just surprised, cuz of the other 2 I've given time to - Hounds of Love and Never For Ever, I really became attached to those quite quickly. It's funny cuz The Dreaming was the first one I bought. Good thing it wasn't the first one I listened to or else I might've given up on her right then and there!

GangstaFam - this record is exactly the reason why I made my comment about 'commercial success' earlier. I think the closest Kate has come to chasing commercial trends would be on 'The Red Shoes' - 'Rubberband Girl' anyone? (And I won't even go near the dance remix of the title track ). 'The Dreaming', however, is the complete opposite - you let it envelop you, not the other way around.
I guarantee that, once it clicks, you'll love this album. Mad genius at work all over it.

It's partly the arrangements that get me. It's very cinematic in places (try Pull Out The Pin over headphones to see what I mean) and the vocal work is just astonishing. She tries a different vocal approach for almost every song. Check the title track.... she even tries to sing like a didgeridoo. It's a very brave album in many ways. Art at it's most self-indulgent? Sure. But it's one hell of a trip. If you like Bjork at her most bizarre, I fail to see how you couldn't eventually grasp this one, too. Good luck.

Of the songs I know from The Red Shoes - Rubberband Girl and the Prince one - they sound like they would've been more at home on mainstream radio in '87 than '93. They're decent songs, but sound really dated now.

Sure, it's wierd as hell, and the first six or seven times I heard it I just couldn't wrap my brain around it. After time, though, I started to see all the subtle layers that are piled on it. It's riveting, to say the least. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I like 'Rubberband Girl' - I just think it's a bit more commercial than most of her efforts. If you're gonna get rough with me, though... I'll say I hate the WHOLE album.

Don't get me wrong, I like those songs. But they seem a lot more of their time and less timeless than the other stuff I've heard from her.

But when you hear them in the context of the album then they probably won't sound as dated. She's a pretty timeless artist. And I hope you like The Song Of Solomon. That track makes me damp.

I am considering getting her album - everyone here seems to drool over it. And I love Moloko, so... As for Roxy - I saw them in London 2 or 3 years ago (?) and - honestly - I was blown away! I thought it was gonna be a cringe-fest but I was surprised by how great it was. Very cohesive. The original line-up are recording a new album too. But I understand your trepidation!
