Siamese Dream is a rock monster. Easily their best album and one of the best rock albums ever. I didn't like the latest Brand New Heavies album though, where did all the funk go ...and their new vocalist is too in your face for their style. She sounds like Joss Stone!

One of the best ever Siamese Dream is the spark that lit a revolution in my life I was raised with 2 primary listening experiences. My mother liked what we now consider classic rock, stuff like the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, later country and Bluegrass (after she married my stepdad) and then my dad listened to Earth Wind & Fire, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and other R&B soul classics. I spent a lot of time at my aunts and you had 2 musical dynamics in that house. She lived in an area where Mexican gangs were prevalent. There was my cousin Aileen who listened to Oldies, R & B, what we now know as “Old School”, soul, rap and “urban” music. Now I know how my mom felt when they called the music she grew up with “Oldies”. It cracks me up that the music we grew up on is now called “Old School” Yikes!!! Then you had the other musical dynamic. My cousin Terry listened to Metal and Rock. Zeppelin, Queen, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Metallica, Judas Priest…you get the idea. I turned away from rock music primarily because my cousin and his friends were druggies and I guess looking back, I associated the music with all that and being a churchboy I just thought of it as evil music. As I got older I stuck with R&B, soul, old school and pop, Prince being my favorite through it all I got my first apartment with my psycho ex when I was 22. It was an abusive relationship and during the relationship, and after, I turned to my music to escape. Music has always been an incredible source of comfort in my life. When we broke up I kept the apartment and music was my outlet. I would just blast my music, get high, drink and dance. The year is 1995. One day I was browsing through the used section of a music store and I saw the album “Siamese Dream” by the Smashing Pumpkins. I had recently heard someone just praising them up and down. So I decided I’d drop the $7 bucks and check it out. This album sparked a revolution in my life. It opened me up to other musical experiences I would have otherwise been closed to. That one album literally led the sea change in my perceptions of rock music up to that time. I just remember donning my headphones after taking a toke and I was just fuckin blown away by what I was hearing. I was flooded with some of the most amazing music I had ever heard. I sat there listening and realized how much music I must had missed out on. It was like drinking water after eating salt in the desert. After that I really got into indie/alternative/rock music. . I think I'm the only one around here who likes Joss Stone The Brand New Heavies is just one of those bands that even if they release an album of farts and the tweeked squeaks of their greased up pubic hairs, I will support them. I can't even describe the impact this bands first 2 albums had on me. N'Dea Davenport, noone can replace her. She was the gas to their fire. She brought out the best in that band and they brought out the best in her. They haven't been the same since. That said, I like this newest album. No it doesn't bring me back to the old days but there are some catchy tunes. I love Boogie, Waste My Time, How Do you Think and I Feel Right. Nicole's voice works in those songs. Keep On Shinin reminds me of what I love about this band's original sound. I have always loved Jan Kincaid's participation in some of their songs. The one thing I do appreciate about her contributions to this album is she isn't tryin to be an N'Dea replacement. She's/they're just doing their thing. I totally missed one of the Heavies album. The one between the latest and Shelter. It was never released here in the US. As for Brother Sister. There is magic, healing, courage, faith and love in that album. I don't think that even if they brought N'Dea back that they'd be able to match that album genuine one of a kindness. I was devastated and heartbroken when she left the band. And it's been 8 years since her solo release. There is no justice in a world that does not have this woman making music. I hope she's got at least one more album in her. Her music has gotten me through so much. That voice.....Beautiful, perfect, poetic, truthful, honest. Her look was slammin during this solo period: . Druggie! j/k Cool story. They kicked my ass too as a high school senior. I would call my local radio station and request "Cherub Rock" every single day. They have one of the coolest dual guitar sounds I've ever heard. Can't wait for Billy's solo album to drop.
