I was listening to Millie Jackson's version of this song and I was wondering who was the artist that originally made this song. I've got to pick this one up.

Thanks David. Once again you came through. I never would have guessed that Toto made "Hold The Line". I remember them from the 1980s, with songs like "Rosanna" and "Africa", which I didn't like. "Hold The Line" is a totally different type song than their 1980s work.

I saw your response at work yesterday and picked up Toto's greatest hits when I got off of work.

Millie did OK with it. She basically just sang it straight through though. I wish she would have broke it down, "rapped" on it, and made it a song of her own like she has when she covered so many other songs.

I think my favorite of their ballads is I Won't Hold You Back. It's one of the best songs on Toto IV, an album that, for all the Grammys it garnered, it pretty hit or miss. There are some great songs on it - I Won't Hold You Back, Rosanna, Africa - but there are also some real clunkers on there. Songs like Good for You and We Made It, though the instrumentation is fine, sound like generic 80s pop rock.

One of the problems(?) with Toto was that they were such good musicians, outside of the band they were 1st call session guys. The fact that they were able to play in so many different styles made them sound like different groups within the same record many times.

A tune like Isolation, for example, could have been recorded by Jefferson Starship with Mickey Thomas singing lead or a group like Journey.

I Won't Hold You Back is a great ballad.
As a testament to the musicianship of Steve Lukather, he didn't go for the here's every lick I know solo.
He played a melody, that showed his understanding of composition and sensitiviy to what the song really needed.
